Full Job Description

Contract Term: June 22, 2026 – September 30, 2026 (This contract position is eligible for extension through December 18, 2026, contingent upon satisfactory performance and organizational needs)

Availability/Hours: Required to work 25 hours per week including some evenings and weekends. The schedule will be adjusted bi-weekly based on the organization’s needs.

Location: This position offers flexible scheduling and remote work opportunities; however, employees are expected to report to the Baltimore Renters United (BRU) office as needed, primarily on Mondays, Wednesdays, and some Saturdays. The role also requires field work, including door-to-door outreach and attendance at community events such as town halls and meetings.

Direct Supervision: Executive Director

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision

Oversee and motivate a team of organizers/supplemental staff in their day-to-day organizing activities toward BRU’s strategic goals and Mission, Vision and Values
Monitor performance and address staff concerns
Develop and maintain calendars
Conduct check in supervision meetings with organizers
Serve as a team leader to organize staff by modeling, coaching, and training organizing staff on best practices to support BRU’s mission
Support the development of BRU organizers
Provide direction to the organizing team by working with staff to develop their organizing goals, work plans, and tasks

Strategy Development

In partnership with BRU Executive Director identify strategic organizing goals and objectives and develop a strategic plan for implementation

Organizing

Lead the organizing team in building and maintaining a base of engaged tenant leaders, who are representative of the people most impacted by housing injustice in Baltimore.
Support organizers with outreach activities including planning and follow up
Maintain data systems for tracking interactions with tenant base, tenant leaders, events and organizational contacts in the BRU data management system
Maintain connections with state, regional and national campaigns for tenants’ rights and housing justice with groups in alignment with BRU’s mission, vision and values
Attend tenant meetings and support with tenant organizing as needed
Doorknock/Canvas impacted neighbors and communities as needed following BRU’s outreach plan

Organizational Support

Lead and coordinate events put on by BRU to include logistics, venue, and team coordination
Represent BRU at community events when needed
Attend BRU internal meetings as needed and participate in all-hands-on-deck actions and significant organizational events
Maintain partnerships with aligned organizations
Conduct trainings, orientation and meetings as needed

Position Requirements:

Demonstrated leadership experience in the nonprofit sector
Experience managing programs, teams, or operations in nonprofit environments
Nonprofit management and organizational leadership experience
Belief in BRU’s mission, vision, and values
High school diploma or equivalent
At least five years of experience with grassroots community organizing
Ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
Maintain relationships with partners
Availability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends
Proficient in listening comprehension and effective note-taking including the ability to capture quotes accurately
Competent in written communication, reading comprehension, and mathematics
Capable of conducting minor research when needed
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment
Ability to use Microsoft Suite and G-Suite for data sheets, word processing, emails, scheduling
Be able to sit at a desk for 3 or more hours
Must have reliable transportation
Resident of Baltimore City Preferred
