Help Patients Navigate Their Pharmacy Accounts
We're seeking a Patient Accounts Specialist (Patient Collections) to join our Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) team. This hybrid position is based in Hunt Valley, Maryland and reports to the Director of Billing & Collections.
As the primary point of contact for patient account inquiries, you'll help patients understand their balances, answer billing questions, establish payment arrangements, and resolve outstanding accounts with professionalism and empathy. You'll also work closely with pharmacy and billing teams to ensure accounts are accurate while delivering an exceptional patient experience.
The ideal candidate has experience in patient collections, patient accounts, or as a Pharmacy Technician, along with an understanding of pharmacy or healthcare billing, including Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, coordination of benefits, copays, and deductibles. Pharmacy Technicians looking to transition into a patient-facing Revenue Cycle role are encouraged to apply. Compensation for this role is $26.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
What You'll Do
Patient Account Management
- Monitor and follow up on outstanding patient account balances.
- Contact patients and responsible parties regarding balances by phone, email, and written correspondence.
- Answer questions regarding invoices, payments, copays, deductibles, insurance processing, and financial responsibility.
- Research and resolve patient account discrepancies by reviewing billing records, insurance information, and payment activity.
- Collect patient payments and process transactions in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Establish and manage patient payment plans.
- Document collection activity and maintain accurate account records.
- Partner with pharmacy and billing teams to resolve patient account concerns.
- Escalate complex account issues when appropriate while maintaining excellent customer service.
Payment Posting & Account Maintenance
- Post patient payments, adjustments, and approved write-offs accurately.
- Reconcile payment activity and resolve payment application issues.
- Maintain accurate patient account information and supporting documentation.
- Assist with patient statements, invoicing, and account maintenance.
- Support initiatives focused on reducing outstanding balances and improving cash collections.
Revenue Cycle Support
- Support departmental KPI goals and Revenue Cycle performance initiatives.
- Collaborate with teammates to improve workflows and enhance the patient experience.
- Assist with additional Revenue Cycle functions as business needs evolve.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Two (2)+ years of experience in patient collections, patient accounts, revenue cycle, healthcare customer service, or as a Pharmacy Technician with experience in pharmacy billing, insurance processing, or patient support.
- Experience communicating directly with patients regarding account balances, payment arrangements, and financial responsibility.
- Working knowledge of pharmacy or healthcare billing, including Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, coordination of benefits, copays, and deductibles.
- Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word).
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or previous Pharmacy Technician experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in a long-term care, specialty, or retail pharmacy environment.
- Experience managing a high volume of inbound and outbound patient calls.
- Experience with patient collections and account resolution.
- Familiarity with pharmacy billing workflows, insurance adjudication, and patient account management.
- Experience with SuiteRx or a similar pharmacy management system.
- Experience working within a healthcare Revenue Cycle environment.
