Full Job Description

Are you a storyteller and strategist who wants your marketing skills to save lives?

The Humane Society of Central Oregon is hiring a Marketing & Communications Manager to connect our community to the animals and people we serve - from Bend, where the Cascades and the Deschutes River sit minutes from the shelter door, and trail runs, ski days, and dog-friendly everything are simply how people live.

Who we're looking for

We want a communicator who sees a story everywhere - a senior dog going home, a family kept together by veterinary outreach, a volunteer who shows up every Sunday - and turns it into action: a donation, an adoption, a supporter for life.

You're a planner who doesn't panic when the plan changes. You can build a quarterly calendar and still drop everything (gracefully) when an emergency mass intake media release has to go public by noon. You're curious about data, calm under pressure, happiest building rather than maintaining, and as comfortable in front of people as you are behind a keyboard.

What you'll do

Develop communications plans supporting fundraising, events, adoptions, and community engagement
Lead content across email, website, social media, print, and media, elevating impact stories that honor the dignity of animals, clients, donors, and volunteers
Own website, email, and social strategy, using analytics to strengthen engagement and fundraising
Help scope, hire, and supervise a Digital Media Specialist
Serve as one of HSCO's spokespeople: give interviews, represent us at community events, manage media relationships, and draft press releases and crisis communications

What you'll bring

Four to six years in communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism
Strong writing, editing, and project management skills across channels
Confident public speaking - you're comfortable with interviews and presentations
Proficiency with email platforms, content management systems, social media, analytics, and basic design tools
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience
Valid driver's license

Nice to have

Nonprofit, fundraising, or animal welfare communications experience
Photography, video, or short-form editing skills
WordPress, donor CRMs, Google Analytics (GA4), or A/B testing

Working conditions

This is a working shelter. The environment can be noisy indoors and out, with exposure to the elements and to animals that may scratch or bite. The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, and standing for long periods, along with sustained computer work.
