Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Acoustic Consultant with 15+ years of relevant experience to join our Chicago, IL office. Responsibilities include working on high-profile projects, conducting field measurements, developing acoustic computer models, and providing consulting to optimize acoustic performance and reduce noise and vibration.
The ideal candidate will have a background in consulting and acoustic engineering, with a strong understanding of acoustic principles and their application in building and environmental acoustics. Proficiency with sound and vibration testing equipment, as well as the ability to measure and analyze results, is required.
Responsibilities include analyzing and evaluating data, reviewing design documents and specifications, and preparing reports. Experience in education, healthcare, government, commercial, residential, or hospitality sectors is highly valued.
Project management experience, involvement in multi-disciplinary design teams, and coordination with architects, engineers, project managers, and developers are essential. We value qualities and experience that strengthen client service and management.
SM&W follows a hybrid work policy. This role requires on-site presence in the Chicago, IL office or at a project site for three days each week, with the option to work remotely for two days.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, motivation, direction, and training to the team to enhance regional growth and ensure business profitability.
- Serve as a technical and project leader, providing direction and oversight on medium to highly complex projects while independently managing responsibilities and deliverables.
- Provide acoustic consulting in architectural and mechanical acoustics, environmental noise control, and vibration isolation projects.
- Serve as Task Lead and/or Project Manager on medium to highly complex projects, providing technical direction and ensuring successful project execution.
- Manage all aspects of assigned projects from initiation through completion, including scope, schedule, budget, design, quality, client communication, consultant coordination, and project deliverables.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of project scope, schedule, and budget, proactively identifying and addressing issues that may affect project performance.
- Serve as a primary point of contact between the design team, clients, users, consultants, and other stakeholders to ensure successful coordination and implementation of acoustic design elements.
- Interact with vendors to facilitate design details and ensure the appropriate specification and integration of acoustic systems and products.
- Stay current on industry developments, emerging technologies, applicable standards, regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Drive culture by setting expectations for work ethic, professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and ownership of the business.
- Actively participate in marketing and business development activities to promote SM&W and its multidisciplinary services.
- Foster a collaborative, high performance environment that reinforces SM&W’s standards for professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and client service.
- This role may require approximately 5% to 15% domestic and international travel
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Acoustics, Physics, Audio Technology, or a related field.
- 15+ years of relevant professional experience, preferably within acoustics, engineering, consulting, or a related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and project stakeholders.
- Strong client service orientation with a commitment to quality, responsiveness, and effective problem solving.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong project management, organizational, and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam, AutoCAD/BIM, EASE, SoundPLAN, and Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Project Management certification is a plus.
- PE Certification is a plus

Annual Salary Range: $110,000- $160,000.
The salary range provided represents only one aspect of the overall employee compensation package. Individual compensation determinations are influenced by various factors, including experience, position level, skill sets, geographic location, and the need to maintain internal equity among peers within the organization. We acknowledge that the candidate selected may have either less experience or higher seniority than suggested in the job posting.
