PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Grant Writer and Development Coordinator

Approximately 20 hours per week | Bethesda, Maryland | Flexible hybrid schedule after onboarding

Help turn a powerful mission into the funding that makes free cancer support possible. Hope Connections is looking for a proactive, resourceful grant professional who can uncover new opportunities, manage the details, and write compelling proposals that move funders to act.

At Hope Connections for Cancer Support, no one should face cancer alone. We provide professionally facilitated emotional support, education, wellness programs, and community to people with cancer and their loved ones, all free of charge. Philanthropic support makes that promise possible.

This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who enjoys both strategy and execution: finding the right prospects, building a disciplined grants pipeline, and translating programs and impact into clear, persuasive funder language. This part-time employee position has the potential to grow as organizational needs and funding allow.

What you will own

Prospect research and pipeline development. Proactively identify and qualify foundation, corporate, and government opportunities aligned with Hope Connections’ mission, programs, geographic reach, and funding priorities.
Grant writing and submission. Independently draft, edit, and submit persuasive letters of inquiry, proposals, renewal requests, and grant reports tailored to each funder’s priorities and requirements.
Grants calendar and deadline management. Maintain a rolling 12 to 18-month calendar tracking prospects, deadlines, internal reviews, submissions, decisions, renewals, reports, and stewardship touchpoints.
Internal coordination. Create clear workback schedules and gather accurate program, impact, budget, and financial information from the Development Director, CEO, program staff, and operations team.
Funder communication and stewardship. Communicate professionally with current and prospective funders, support relationship-building, and help ensure timely follow-up.
Grant systems and materials. Maintain organized files, standard narratives, current statistics, supporting documents, funder notes, and proposal outcomes.
Creative growth. Look beyond the obvious prospects and bring fresh ideas, partnerships, or approaches that could expand revenue. Contribute to select development projects as capacity allows.

What you bring

At least three years of successful nonprofit grant writing, grants management, institutional fundraising, or closely related experience.
A track record of developing competitive foundation, corporate, and/or government proposals, with the ability to explain your role and results.
Excellent writing, editing, research, project management, and verbal communication skills.
A proactive, go-getter mindset; strong organization and follow-through; creative thinking; sound judgment; and a positive, collaborative approach.
Strong attention to detail and proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, online research, shared files, and grant portals.
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Responsible use of AI for research, outlining, or editing is welcome, but you must be able to research, draft, revise, fact-check, and complete a compelling proposal independently.
Knowledge of the Washington, DC-area philanthropic community, healthcare or cancer-support funding, government grants, or nonprofit CRMs is helpful, but not required.

Position details

Structure: Part-time, hourly, nonexempt employee position averaging approximately 20 hours per week.
Reporting: Reports to the Director of Development and works closely with the President and CEO and other staff.
Mission immersion: During the first 30 days, the employee will work onsite in our Bethesda office at least one day each week to become deeply familiar with our programs, participants, impact, voice, and day-to-day work.
Hybrid schedule: After the first 30 days, the role may move to a more flexible hybrid schedule with regular virtual collaboration and periodic onsite meetings.
Growth potential: The position may expand in hours or transition into a full-time role as needs and resources evolve.
Compensation: $32 to $40 per hour, commensurate with experience and demonstrated grant-writing success.
Benefits and other compensation: This part-time position accrues paid sick leave at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, which may be used for illness, medical care, caregiving, or other purposes protected under Montgomery County law.
Confidentiality: The selected candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
