Full Job Description

Licensed Acupuncturist, Inpatient Integrative Medicine Consult Service (Founding Role)

Los Angeles | Full time preferred, part-time and per diem considered | Start date: April 2027

A new inpatient integrative medicine consult service is launching at a large Los Angeles hospital, and we are hiring the acupuncturist who will help build it. The starting team is one physician, one nurse practitioner, and one licensed acupuncturist.

We will see hospitalized patients with chronic and functional pain syndromes, those who stay longer and return often because standard approaches have not worked for them. Our tools are acupuncture, mind-body medicine, trigger point injections, and opioid-sparing regimens. Herbs are not available to us given inpatient pharmacy restrictions, so we emphasize dietary guidance and self-care practices patients can use during and after hospitalization. There is no cost to the patient. We are measuring readmissions, opioid use, and length of stay, and we intend to publish.

The acupuncturist is central to this service, not adjunct to it. You will treat medically complex hospitalized patients as an independently licensed clinician, help write inpatient protocols that do not yet exist, and shape how the service works. You are not a comfort measure. You are being asked to help patients the rest of the hospital has not been able to help.

What you'll do

Provide bedside acupuncture and related modalities to hospitalized patients, practicing independently within the full scope of the California Acupuncture Licensure Act
Collaborate with the consult physician, nurse practitioner, and primary hospital teams on treatment planning
Apply appropriate modifications for anticoagulated, thrombocytopenic, neutropenic, and post-surgical patients
Document treatments in Epic and capture structured outcomes data in a research registry
Build inpatient treatment protocols for oncology, surgical, cardiothoracic, and spine populations

Requirements

Active, unrestricted California Acupuncture Board license
Clean licensure and disciplinary history, and eligibility for hospital allied health credentialing
Current BLS
Demonstrated experience with medically complex patients

Preferred

Prior hospital, hospice, or integrative oncology experience
Comfort treating patients who are acutely ill, immobile, or in significant distress, and ability to adapt point selection around wounds, dressings, lines, and mobility restrictions
Comfort with functional pain syndromes and trauma-informed care
Familiarity with Western medical terminology and ability to explain East Asian medical principles in plain language
Experience with auricular or battlefield acupuncture protocols
Interest in clinical outcomes research
NCCAOM certification

What we offer

This is a salaried, employed, hospital-based position. There is no room rental, no percentage of collections, and no practice to build.

Compensation

Five days per week preferred for the founding role, with four-day schedules considered for the right candidate. We are also building a per diem pool and welcome applications from acupuncturists interested in occasional coverage, including those maintaining their own practice.

About the employer

This role is with Andrew Shubov, M.D., A Professional Corporation, which operates the service under contract with the hospital. You would be credentialed to the hospital's allied health staff and work in its facilities, but employed by the practice. We aim to fill this role by September so that credentialing can begin in October for an April 2027 start.

Pay: $120,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
