Inbound Sales Development Representative — AI Tax Software
SmartWiz | Birmingham, Alabama | Office-first, with hybrid flexibility after certificationFull-time W-2 positionTarget OTE: $65,000–$75,000 | $22/hour base + uncapped performance compensation
Warm leads. Real conversations. A direct path into technology sales.
SmartWiz is building the financial operating system for millions of Americans—starting with an AI-powered platform that helps independent tax professionals and CPAs prepare returns in minutes.
Our AI tax assistant, Wizzy, reads a client’s documents, drafts the return, and enters the information directly into the professional tax software the preparer already uses. That means less re-keying, fewer tabs, and more time serving clients and growing their businesses.
SmartWiz is headquartered in Birmingham, with a new office in Silicon Valley. We are SOC 2 compliant and serve independent tax offices across the country.
We now have a good problem: more tax professionals are requesting information, attending events, registering for demonstrations, and asking to see SmartWiz than our sales team can reach quickly enough.
We are hiring an Inbound Sales Development Representative to make sure interested tax professionals receive a fast, helpful, human response.
This is not a traditional cold-prospecting role.
You will spend most of your time contacting people who have already expressed interest in SmartWiz, reconnecting with warm prospects, recovering missed demonstrations, qualifying opportunities, and helping customers take the next step.
When a prospect is ready to see the product immediately, you will not always schedule them for another day. Once certified, you will be able to launch the video call, share your screen, and show them SmartWiz while their interest is high.
What you will own
You will own the earliest and most time-sensitive part of the sales process: converting interest into a real sales conversation.
- Respond quickly to new inbound leads by phone, text, email, and video.
- Contact tax professionals who requested information, registered for a webinar, attended an event, began an application, requested a demonstration, or previously spoke with SmartWiz.
- Follow up with warm prospects who have not yet scheduled or completed their demonstration.
- Confirm upcoming demonstrations and reconnect with prospects who missed or rescheduled their appointments.
- Ask thoughtful qualification questions about the prospect’s tax office, software, return volume, workflow, goals, and buying timeline.
- Identify which prospects should be moved immediately to an Account Executive.
- Schedule qualified demonstrations and prepare the Account Executive with complete, useful notes.
- Conduct same-day and on-the-spot product demonstrations after completing SmartWiz Academy certification.
- Close straightforward opportunities when assigned or approved to do so.
- Re-engage interested prospects who previously went quiet or delayed their decision.
- Maintain accurate contact activity, qualification details, deal stages, and next steps in HubSpot.
- Use persistence without becoming pushy. Our prospects should feel helped, not hunted.
- Surface recurring questions, objections, buying signals, and product feedback to the sales and product teams.
- Work closely with Account Executives to ensure warm opportunities receive fast and consistent follow-up.
You will not spend your day purchasing lists, researching random companies, or repeatedly calling people who have never heard of SmartWiz.
The people you contact have raised their hands in some way. Your job is to reach them while their interest is high, understand what they need, and move the right prospects forward.
What success looks like
Within your first 90 days, you will be able to:
- Respond confidently and professionally to new inbound leads.
- Hold natural conversations with independent tax professionals.
- Qualify prospects without making the interaction feel like an interrogation.
- Convert warm interest into completed demonstrations and real sales opportunities.
- Recover missed appointments and revive opportunities that might otherwise have been lost.
- Conduct a complete introductory SmartWiz demonstration independently.
- Recognize when to continue the conversation and when to bring in an Account Executive.
- Maintain an organized pipeline with accurate notes and clear next steps.
- Follow up consistently across phone, text, email, and video.
- Demonstrate strong product knowledge, coachability, urgency, and personal accountability.
Success is measured through:
- Speed to first contact
- Meaningful conversations
- Qualified demonstrations completed
- Demonstration attendance rate
- Opportunities created or reactivated
- Eligible contract value sourced
- Revenue influenced or closed
- Follow-up discipline
- CRM accuracy
- Call quality
- Customer experience
We care about activity, but we do not reward activity for its own sake. A hundred careless calls are less valuable than the conversations that move the right customers forward.
You may be a great fit if
- You are warm, confident, persistent, and comfortable speaking with new people.
- You enjoy following up and do not take a missed call or initial “not right now” personally.
- You can create urgency without creating pressure.
- You listen carefully and ask useful questions before presenting a solution.
- You communicate naturally instead of sounding as though you are reading from a script.
- You are comfortable calling, texting, emailing, and speaking with prospects through video.
- You are comfortable sharing your screen and learning to demonstrate software.
- You learn technology quickly and enjoy understanding how products work.
- You are organized enough to manage a high-volume follow-up pipeline without losing important details.
- You are comfortable being measured, receiving coaching, and reviewing recorded calls.
- You can recognize a buying signal and confidently ask a prospect to take the next step.
- You are available for a schedule that includes some evenings and one weekend day, with corresponding flexibility during the week.
A college degree is not required. We care more about communication, judgment, curiosity, resilience, coachability, work ethic, and results.
Strong advantages
These qualifications are helpful but not required:
- Sales, customer-service, call-center, hospitality, banking, insurance, wireless, automotive, recruiting, or appointment-setting experience
- Experience working in or supporting a tax office
- Familiarity with professional tax software
- SaaS, fintech, payroll, accounting, or financial-services experience
- Experience managing warm leads or following up after marketing campaigns
- Experience conducting product demonstrations
- Experience using HubSpot or another CRM
- Spanish fluency
Spanish fluency is especially valuable because a meaningful portion of the market we serve prefers to conduct business in Spanish.
Compensation and structure
- Full-time W-2 position
- $22 per hour guaranteed base compensation
- Target on-plan earnings of approximately $65,000–$75,000 annually
A qualified completed demonstration must meet the company’s eligibility standards, include the appropriate decision-maker, and be accurately documented in HubSpot.
Commission eligibility, attribution, qualified-demonstration requirements, payment timing, cancellations, refunds, split credit, and eligible contract value will be defined in the written compensation plan before employment begins.
Actual compensation depends on hours worked, individual performance, qualified demonstrations completed, contract values, customer payment status, cancellations, and other factors. Earnings are not guaranteed.
Location and schedule
This position is based in Birmingham, Alabama.
New team members will work primarily from our Birmingham headquarters during SmartWiz Academy training and their initial ramp period.
After certification and demonstrated performance:
- Up to two remote days may be available each week.
- Some evening follow-up and demonstrations may be completed remotely.
- Continued flexibility depends on performance, responsiveness, call quality, CRM discipline, and collaboration.
The schedule will include some evenings and one weekend day because many independent tax professionals are available outside traditional business hours. Corresponding flexibility will be provided during the week.
What this role is not
This is not a role where you spend the entire day making cold calls to strangers.
It is also not a passive customer-service position where you wait for someone else to create the next step.
The strongest person in this role will be proactive. When a warm lead is available, you call. When someone misses a demonstration, you reconnect. When a prospect is ready now, you help now. When the customer needs a product demonstration, you are prepared to deliver one.
Calls are recorded and reviewed because coaching is central to how we improve. You should want feedback, accountability, repetition, and the opportunity to become exceptional at sales.
This role will not be a fit for someone who avoids phone conversations, gives up quickly on follow-up, dislikes measurable goals, resists coaching, or requires a traditional Monday-through-Friday daytime schedule.

We move quickly and aim to complete the process within 7–10 business days.
