Plant Controller, Paper Manufacturing

Birmingham, AL | $115,000 - $118,000 | Full-Time

A global paper manufacturing company is hiring a Plant Controller at its Birmingham, AL facility. This role leads plant-level financial operations including month-end close, financial reporting, cost accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and manufacturing variance analysis. The Plant Controller partners closely with plant leadership to drive cost improvements, support capital investment decisions, and maintain strong internal controls and SOX compliance.

Schedule

Full-time, on-site in Birmingham, AL.

Compensation: $115,000 - $118,000

What You'll Do

As Plant Controller, you will lead the month-end close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across the facility. Your ongoing responsibilities will include preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial statements, performing budget and forecast variance analysis, and maintaining general ledger accuracy through journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and discrepancy resolution. You will oversee standard costing, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold, including excess and obsolete inventory analysis, and you will analyze manufacturing variances across labor, overhead, efficiency, scrap, and rework categories. When variances surface, you will partner directly with operations to identify root causes and drive measurable performance improvement.

Financial planning is a core part of this position. You will lead the plant budgeting and forecasting cycles, develop financial models to support business decisions, and provide analytical insight to plant leadership on an ongoing basis. You will evaluate capital investments through ROI analysis, support CAPEX planning, and track project performance against approved budgets in partnership with plant leadership.

You will also serve as the primary point of accountability for internal controls and SOX compliance at the plant level, supporting both internal and external audits as needed. You will work cross-functionally across finance, operations, and plant leadership to ensure that financial processes are well-controlled, consistently executed, and aligned with corporate reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
5 or more years of experience in a manufacturing finance environment
Strong background in cost accounting, inventory management, and month-end close processes
Experience with SOX compliance, internal controls, and audit support
ERP system experience required; SAP strongly preferred
Advanced Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, slicers, and data analysis
Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in paper, packaging, or forest products manufacturing
CPA or CMA certification
Experience with reporting and financial tools including Power BI, Longview, BOBJ, or Serrala
Familiarity with SuccessFactors
Prior experience in a plant controller or site finance lead role with direct partnership to plant operations leadership
