As a Business & Benefits Administration Intern, you will be an integral part of our Benefits team and ensure retirement and insurance benefits are administered effectively and accurately for the active and retired team members we serve. You will receive hands-on experience in the various NDPERS retirement plans and be introduced to the NDPERS insurance benefits. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to learn and dive into our retirement business services, including processing retirement refund/rollover applications and enrollment elections, updating critical member information, responding to member inquiries, and verifying salary and retirement benefit information.
To thrive in this role, you'll enjoy working with Excel, be flexible in your daily tasks, possess excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Hiring Salary: $18.00/hour
Schedule: This internship will be approximately 40 hours per week during the summer months and then will adjust to 15-20 hours per week during the school year. Flexibility is offered to accommodate classes and student schedules. Additional hours may be offered based on student availability.
The internship can begin in August 2026 based on student availability. The duration of this internship is estimated to be six to fifteen months but will be determined based on factors such as the student's availability and the needs of the division.
Location: The position is based on site at our office location in Bismarck, ND.
Summary of Work
- Process refund/rollover applications, respond to member inquiries for benefit payments and follow up on missing documentation.

Perform data entry of retirement forms, including but is not limited to beneficiary forms, direct deposit information, and tax withholding.

Research and respond to member or beneficiary inquiries regarding applications, incomplete forms, payments, and service purchase status. This may include responding by phone, written correspondence or assisting in-person walk-ins.

Conduct preliminary reviews and identify discrepancies in state employee pension benefit payments and new retiree accounts to be processed for monthly pension payroll.

Verify member salaries, service credit, service purchases, final average salary, and retirement documentation on file.

Review and process active and retired member submitted elections for retirement and insurance.
- Support quality assurance by reviewing transactions for accuracy, complete special projects, and maintain confidentiality of member information.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must be:
- Enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college or university.

At least of sophomore standing by the beginning of the internship.

Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Working in an internship that aligns with the student's academic major or career goals. Majors in accounting, business administration, finance, human resources, or a related field will be accepted.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel are also required.
