Full Job Description

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

➢ This hourly position is responsible for assisting the dentist in the clinics for the treatment of patients and ensuring that the clinics run smoothly and efficiently.

➢ Hours for this position will vary due to clinical and staffing demands; flexibility is essential to this position, both in work hours and location.

Normal working hours are:

Monday: 7:10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. /10:10 a.m. -6:00 p.m..

Tuesday - Thursday: 7:10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Friday 7:10 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Saturday coverage as needed 7:40-12:00. Saturday clinics are ONLY during the school year. All Saturday time worked is paid at OT (time and a half)

➢ Covers at Edina and Eden Prairie and as needed at Burnsville

MUST be a licensed and certified Dental Assistant.

Accountability and Principal Duties:

1. PATIENT CARE:

Greet parent and patient by name; identify yourself both verbally and by wearing your name tag.
Escort patients to and from treatment areas.
Listen to and resolve concerns from parents and patients.
Confirm accuracy of medical history data using both interviews and written questions in compliance with HIPAA.
Inform parent/guardian of the treatment to be performed and document approval.
Pre-appoint the next recare visit.
Give oral hygiene instruction.
Give post-operative instructions in oral health care to be implemented at home after surgical/restorative procedures.

2. CHAIRSIDE:

1. Apply concepts of four-handed dentistry to all tasks.

2. Assist doctor at chairside.

3. EXPANDED FUNCTIONS FOR MINNESOTA LICENSED DENTAL ASSISTANTS:

Perform mechanical polishing to clinical crowns not including instrumentation. Removal of calculus by instrumentation must be done by the dentist or dental hygienist before mechanical polishing.
Take radiographs.
Monitor a patient who has been induced by a dentist into nitrous oxide-oxygen relative analgesia.
Etch appropriate enamel surfaces, apply pit and fissure sealants and adjust pit and fissure sealants. **
Remove excess bond material from teeth with rotary instruments after removal of orthodontic appliances. ***
Administer nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia pursuant to the rule provisions. ***

** Before the application of pit and fissure sealants, a Licensed dental assistant must have

successfully completed a course in pit and fissure sealants at a dental school, dental hygiene

school, or dental assisting school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation.

***A Licensed Dental Assistant must complete the required number of continuing education hours

before performing these expanded functions at an accredited dental assisting school. New

graduates of an accredited dental assisting program are educated and tested on these and are

able to legally perform them once becoming Licensed.

****All Licensed Dental Assistants must complete the required number of continuing education hours

before performing these expanded functions at an accredited dental assisting school.

4. ELECTRONIC RECORD KEEPING:

1. Chart:

conditions as dictated by the doctor in electronic record/chart.
existing restorations.
conversations the doctor has with parents/patients.

2. Prepare lab prescriptions, referrals, doctor written requests-scan into electronic chart.

3. Complete treatment records.

4. Record plaque and gum scores on report card and in the electronic record/chart.

5. Record behavior in electronic chart.

5. TREATMENT PREPARATION: *

1. Open and close treatment areas.

2. Prepare operatory for patient treatment with all necessary instruments and materials.

3. Prepare tray set-ups.

6. LABORATORY:

1. Pour models.
2. Monitor dental lab pick-up and delivery.

7. INFECTION CONTROL:

1. Standard precautions will be applied in all clinical areas and for all patients.

2. Clean and disinfect treatment areas following office protocol.

3. Wear gloves, mask, and protective eyewear for all dental procedures.

4. Clean, sterilize, and/or disinfect instruments following office protocol and Board of Dentistry rules which include the use of utility gloves.

5. Disinfect impressions, lab cases, and lab equipment.
6. Abide by OSHA, Infection Control, and other federal and state regulations.

8. WORK AREA MAINTENANCE:

1. Check emergency equipment.

2. Maintain appearance and supplies in: a. Treatment areas b. Sterilization area c. Laboratory e. Storage area

3. Conduct maintenance of operatory, sterilization area, and laboratory equipment according to designated schedule.

4. Report needed repairs and/or contact dental equipment service department.

5. Clean and replace suction traps according to designated schedule.

9. INVENTORY CONTROL:

1. Assist in or maintain inventory supply control: a. Follow inventory control system procedure. b. Check in supplies. c. Process invoices

10. PATIENT COMMUNICATION:

1. Provide patient preventive education.

2. Conduct new patient interviews.

11. MISCELLANEOUS:

1. Assist with medical emergency treatment.

2. Participate in emergency treatment practice.

3. Accountable for being a team player and lending support to the rest of the office when possible.
4. Accountable for following up on issues/errors and working as a team to find a solution.
5. Responsible for marketing the practice in a positive and professional manner.
6. Accountable to keep the clinic neat, orderly, and professional looking at all times.
7. Maintain current CPR certification, LDA, CDA, credentials

8. Remain updated on new developments in materials, procedures, and infection control.
9. Responsible for mentoring and training of externs, new hires and current staff. As well as students who are observing.

10. Completing peer reviews is an essential required task for all positions at Dentistry for Children &
Adolescents.

11. During ‘down time’ call parents/patients on the delinquent recare list and reappoint them.

Education/Experience: Graduate of an accredited dental assisting program. Must have current

BLS for HCP/Healthcare Provider CPR certification, current licensure with the state of

Minnesota Board of Dentistry, and current certification with the Dental Assisting National Board.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
