Toolmaker / Precision Metal Fabricator / Manual Machinist
Alpha Metalcraft Group (AMG) – Commack, NY
Company Overview
Alpha Metalcraft Group (AMG) – Commack is a precision metal manufacturing facility with more than 100 years of experience producing deep-drawn and fabricated metal components. Our team supports customers across aerospace, defense, medical, high-voltage, and other precision manufacturing industries.
We are looking for a mechanically skilled Toolmaker, Precision Metal Fabricator, Manual Machinist, or experienced manufacturing professional who is interested in expanding their skills in die setup and tooling.
Candidates with backgrounds in tool & die, metal fabrication, manual lathes or mills, press setup, machining, or other precision metalworking environments are encouraged to apply.
Position Summary
The Die Setter is responsible for setting up and supporting mechanical and hydraulic presses ranging from 20 to 600 tons.
This is a hands-on position requiring strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading, precision measurement, troubleshooting skills, and an understanding of how tooling and material interact during the manufacturing process.
We are open to experienced Die Setters as well as skilled metalworking professionals who have the mechanical foundation and interest to further develop their die-setting and tooling skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, repair, maintain, and modify precision dies and tooling used in metal forming and deep-draw operations.
- Perform preventive and corrective die maintenance to support production requirements and minimize downtime.
- Troubleshoot die and tooling issues, identify root causes, and make necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Disassemble, inspect, clean, sharpen, polish, fit, and reassemble dies and tooling components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, tooling drawings, process sheets, and dimensional specifications.
- Manufacture, repair, and fit tooling components using manual machining, grinding, and other toolroom equipment.
- Use precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions, clearances, fits, and tolerances.
- Perform die spotting, fitting, alignment, and adjustments to ensure proper operation and part quality.
- Diagnose issues related to punches, dies, inserts, forming components, cutting edges, and other tooling.
- Support new tooling builds, tooling modifications, engineering changes, and continuous improvement projects.
- Work closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality to resolve tooling-related quality and manufacturing issues.
- Maintain tooling and die maintenance records, including repairs, modifications, and preventive maintenance activities.
- Safely operate toolroom machinery and material-handling equipment while following all company safety procedures.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands-on toolmaking, die maintenance, or tool & die experience in a precision manufacturing environment preferred.
- Strong experience with progressive, compound, forming, and/or deep-draw dies.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and modify complex dies and tooling.
- Proficient in manual machining, including mills, lathes, surface grinders, and related toolroom equipment.
- Skilled in die fitting, spotting, sharpening, polishing, alignment, and assembly.
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, tooling drawings, GD&T, and dimensional specifications.
- Proficient with precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges, and gauges.
- Strong understanding of tooling clearances, tolerances, materials, and metal-forming processes.
- Ability to diagnose tooling-related part defects and determine appropriate corrective action.
- Experience supporting high-precision, close-tolerance production; aerospace, defense, medical, or similarly regulated manufacturing experience is a plus.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively support Production, Engineering, and Quality.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills.
- Willingness and ability to share knowledge and mentor less-experienced toolroom and production employees.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; formal Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship, trade school, or equivalent combination of training and extensive hands-on experience preferred.
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status is required due to ITAR-controlled technical data access requirements.
Great Opportunity for an Experienced Metalworker
Finding experienced toolmakers and die setters can be challenging, so we are also interested in candidates with strong transferable metalworking skills.
If you have experience as a manual machinist, manual lathe operator, precision metal fabricator, press setup technician, mold or die technician, or similar skilled trade professional and are interested in developing additional tooling and die-setting expertise, we encourage you to apply.
