Legislative Coordinator

The Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) is seeking a Legislative Coordinator who provides high-level coordination, administrative support, and project-based research to the Legislative Division. The position plays a critical role in supporting the division’s strategic goals while enhancing cross-organizational services and engagement.

About the MMA: The nonpartisan Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) is the recognized voice of local government across the state, advancing cities and towns as centers of excellence in our economy and society. The MMA provides high-impact services to its member cities and towns statewide, including advocacy, policy research and analysis, multi-faceted education and training, multi-platform publications and nationally-recognized municipal service programs. As a membership organization, the MMA works to advance the interests of all cities and towns, uniting local leaders to promote local government policies and programs that build strong communities.

About the position: Under the direction of the Senior Executive & Legislative Director, the Legislative Coordinator supports the operation and logistics for legislative initiatives and special projects. Responsibilities include organizing and managing regular legislative convenings, including the Local Government Advisory Commission, legislative breakfasts, and other legislative meetings as assigned. This role also coordinates targeted legislative communications to legislators, municipal officials, and various activities and events related to the MMA’s annual conference, known as Connect 351. The Legislative Coordinator also serves as a liaison for the Legislative Division with other internal teams and working groups while contributing to MMA’s newsletter and website.

: The Legislative Coordinator originates and assists in drafting Legislative Division materials, presentations, and policy updates. This role supports the Senior Executive & Legislative Director with testimony and other advocacy documents, prepares articles for publications, and develops legislative presentations. Further duties include conducting project-based research on policy issues to prepare summaries, member surveys, and reports for internal and external use, while also assisting with legislative tracking efforts in the Massachusetts General Court.

The role provides administrative support to Legislative Division staff and MMA policy committees as assigned. This includes managing document preparation, informational materials, and note taking. The Coordinator also manages Legislative Division schedules, including direct support of the Senior Executive & Legislative Director for both in-person and virtual meetings.

The Legislative Coordinator serves as a primary contact for member inquiries, responding via telephone and email while coordinating follow-up with appropriate staff. The role assists with the development and dissemination of policy resources for members and supports ongoing database management tasks.

Qualifications: A college degree is required and three-plus years of relevant experience. An interest in public policy work and/or local government is highly preferred.

Strong interpersonal skills and professional written and oral communication abilities are essential, as well as attention to detail. The ability to multitask and work both independently and as part of a team is critical.

: understanding of Massachusetts state government and the legislative process, local government, Google Suite, legislative tracking and advocacy tools, Canva, Qualtrics, IMIS/Informz and other data management systems.

A driver’s license is required for in-state travel to meetings and events.

Work environment and compensation: Our offices are located in Boston’s Government Center neighborhood. The position offers a salary range of $76,500 - $82,875 and includes terrific benefits, and a great collaborative work culture. Our office utilizes a hybrid-work schedule.
