Full Job Description

The Open Center for Children in Somerville, MA seeks a dual Pedagogista/Assistant Director.

The Pedagogista/Assistant Director promotes and advances Reggio-inspired practices by working closely with teachers to inspire, mentor, and scaffold their progress. They encourage teachers to develop their teaching philosophy, hone in on their strengths, and create and work on personal goals. The Pedagogista supports the development of a rich, inquiry-based curriculum and learning projects. This role shares some general administrative tasks with the Director to support school operations.

Pedagogical Responsibilities

Work with Educators on observation, documentation, and professional growth

Work with teams and individual teachers to create documentation throughout the year
Work with teams and individual teachers to create curriculum based on observations
Attend/facilitate team meetings, as needed
Identity goals for the school, teaching teams, and individual teachers and seek out relevant professional development opportunities
Model best practices with in-classroom support

Promote partnership with families

Support teaching teams in including family engagement elements in their curricular threads
Contribute to social media accounts
Support the Family-Focused Services Coordinator and teaching teams to plan community events
Attend and participate in monthly board meetings

Promote inclusion and anti-bias approaches in the school

Support and deepen school values on inclusion and anti-bias
Evaluate materials to ensure both windows and mirrors are present in classrooms and shared spaces
Encourage teams to include anti-bias elements in their curricular threads
Identify areas in which the school can progress within the four anti-bias goals

Shared Administrative Responsibilities (with Director)

Enrollment

Assist with enrollment, waitlist, and admissions management
Attend Open House, communicate with prospective families about Reggio-inspired approaches to early education

Staff Recruitment & Orientation

Assist in screening resumes and conducting interviews
Assist with onboarding tasks focused on teaching approach and feedback sessions during the orientation period
Provide input to the DIrector in employment-related matters including hiring and terminations

Staff Training

Assist in developing and executing staff meeting agendas
Assist in planning and executing Staff Work Week
Assist in ensuring staff remain in compliance with EEC licensing standards
Together with the Director, supervise and/or coach teachers and staff

Operations Support

Together with the DIrector, provide classroom coverage as needed for meetings, absences, etc.
Assist in developing and/or refining schedule/daily routines
Attend monthly board meeting
Support ongoing EEC licensing compliance and assist with relicensing, when applicable

Qualifications

Sound experience in and knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach to education
Desire to work with a motivated group of teachers in a progressive environment
EEC Director, I/T, and Preschool certification.
B.A. or B.S. (or pursuing) in Early Childhood Education or related field
Ability to relate to families in a holistic fashion
Experience and demonstrated sensitivity in working with groups and/or families from diverse cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
Knowledge of community resources to support appropriate referrals
Comply with NAEYC Guidelines of Ethical Conduct by promoting the unique identity of each child and family; conforming with program confidentiality; following child supervision and guidance policies; and all other guidelines in the Staff Handbook
Complete the CORI background check prior to offer of employment
Current Health Exam (must be obtained prior to employment).
Current First Aid & CPR certificate within 30 days of employment (maintain current certificate during employment)

Salary range: $68,000 to $78,000 based on education and experience.
