We serve chef-crafted sushi and sides, prepared fresh each day by our culinary team, thoughtfully packaged, and ready when our guests are — bringing together the quality of a great sushi restaurant with the convenience people need for everyday life.

Our first restaurant in Boston's Seaport is more than a single location — it's the foundation of a brand built to grow. We're building the culinary systems, sourcing standards, and operational excellence to scale without ever compromising on quality.

As our General Manager, you won't just run a restaurant — you'll define the guest experience, build the founding team, and shape the operating playbook Happy Rice takes to every location that follows.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The General Manager owns the total performance of our Seaport flagship — the guest experience, the team, the case, the culture, and the P&L. Happy Rice runs on a retail grab-and-go model: food is produced fresh throughout the day, thoughtfully packaged, labeled, and merchandised in a refrigerated case for guest self-selection, with delivery and catering extending our reach well beyond the storefront. There are no tickets, no expo, and no line service — every guest receives the same restaurant-quality experience whether they visit at 11:00 a.m. or 7:00 p.m.

Because of that, this role looks a lot more like running a high-performing food retail or grocery prepared-foods operation than a traditional restaurant. We're looking for a leader whose instincts are built around merchandising, in-stock position, throughput at the register, shrink control, and a beautifully presented, welcoming storefront — paired with genuine, people-first hospitality and the kind of positive energy that makes guests (and teammates) want to come back.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Retail & Guest Experience

Own the daily presentation of the grab-and-go case — fully stocked, beautifully merchandised, accurately labeled, and rotated all day
Manage case planograms, product placement, and signage to drive sales and guest discovery
Deliver fast, friendly checkout and genuine hospitality at every touchpoint, including loyalty enrollment at the register
Monitor sell-through and waste by daypart, and partner with the culinary team to adjust production targets

Delivery & Catering

Own the delivery channel — manage third-party platform presence (DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.), menu accuracy, order flow, packaging quality, and on-time performance
Grow catering as a meaningful sales channel — from corporate lunch drops to events — including order intake, production coordination, and flawless execution
Ensure the delivery and catering guest experience is every bit as fresh, accurate, and delightful as in-store

Team Leadership & Culture

Recruit, hire, train, and develop front-of-house team members
Build a fun, upbeat, high-performance, guest-obsessed culture where people genuinely love coming to work
Conduct coaching, performance reviews, and ongoing training
Build schedules that balance guest traffic patterns and labor goals
Lead by example on the floor during peak periods — bringing the energy when it matters most

Operations & Financial Accountability

Oversee daily store operations, including opening, closing, and cash handling procedures
Manage inventory, ordering, receiving, and vendor relationships
Control shrink, waste, labor, and controllable expenses
Drive sales and profitability; analyze weekly P&L performance
Maintain food safety, sanitation, and regulatory compliance standards in partnership with the culinary team
Maintain accurate reporting and operational records
Build and document repeatable processes, playbooks, and best practices at the flagship that become the operating blueprint as Happy Rice grows into new locations

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

General Manager or Store Manager experience in retail, grocery, prepared foods, convenience, or high-volume grab-and-go food retail — we care more about your leadership and instincts than a number of years
P&L ownership, including labor, shrink, and inventory management
Strong merchandising instincts and pride in visual presentation
Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop hourly teams
Positive, high-energy presence — you set the tone for the whole store
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in food retail, grocery prepared foods, or quick service grab-and-go concepts
Multi-unit or flagship/high-volume location experience
ServSafe Manager Certification (or ability to obtain)
Experience with POS, loyalty, and inventory management technology platforms

$100,000 annual salary
