ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.

About The Community Learning Center:

The Community Learning Center (CLC) empowers a diverse community of adult learners to transform their lives and realize their potential through education, skills development, and community participation. Students are predominantly low-income Cambridge residents; come from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds; and are currently enrolled in English or Adult Basic Education classes or training.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The CLC's Part-time ESOL teachers are responsible for teaching classes, writing lesson plans, developing instructional materials, providing ongoing assessment of students, reviewing goals and achievements with students, and maintaining records of student participation and progress. They may serve on a team, and they may serve as part-time representatives to staff and department meetings.

We are looking for a committed individual who will flourish in these roles:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Dynamically teach ESOL classes to adult learners, whether in person, hybrid, or online
Provide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to help students achieve college, career, and personal goals
Work as a team with other teachers and staff to develop materials, lessons, and share best practices
Engage in ongoing professional development to continually improve our services

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

One year of experience teaching ESOL
Knowledge of methods and materials used in ESOL instruction.
Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner population
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
A commitment to racial equity and a desire to understand and interrupt systemic racism and other forms of oppression

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience teaching adults in a community-based setting
Experience with remote instruction, digital literacy, and distance learning
A passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and learning new things
BEST Plus and/or TABE CLAS-E certification
Background in special education or teaching reading.
Availability to teach two evenings per week, from 6:15 to 9:15pm

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS

General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting; work to be performed onsite.
Job requires computer use. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
Be comfortable to work primarily in a standard office environment with moderate noise level, telephones, personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.

The salary range listed in this job posting reflects the full range for this position's pay grade (Steps 1–10). New employees joining the organization are hired within the hiring range, Steps 1 through 5, with placement at the midpoint reserved for the most qualified candidates. Starting placement is based on directly related education and experience relative to the minimum qualifications of the position, required licenses or certifications, internal equity with current employees, and relevant labor market factors. Employees progress through the 10 steps over time through the City's established step and pay progression policies.
