Full Job Description

Job Summary

This position requires a dedicated, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual to work as part of the Aquarium Dive Operations team. This position reports to the Aquarium Dive Safety Officer (DSO) and assists with supervising and facilitating safe diving operations within the Mote Aquarium. The main focus of the Assistant Dive Safety Officer is to provide essential topside supervision and in-water support to staff and volunteer dive teams, and assist with diver training, equipment repair, record keeping, and other diving needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist, supports and coordinates daily dive operations through top-side and in-water supervision Assist the Aquarium Dive Operations team with oversight of daily exhibit dive operations to ensure compliance with Mote dive procedures and regulations
Assist in the enforcement of policies and procedures that ensure the safety of all Aquarium-related diving operations
Act as department leader when the Aquarium Dive Safety Officer is unavailable by completing tasks such as scheduling daily tasks, maintaining team motivation, making safety judgment decisions, and resolving conflicts
Lead/carry out diver emergency rescues and trainings in all roles
Lead, support and/or assist with leading CPR, AED, FA and 02 Admin trainings
Maintain, troubleshoot and repair dive equipment including BC's, 1st and 2nd stage regulators, and high-pressure cylinders
Maintain workflow, organization and inventory of dive and safety equipment
Assist in record keeping for personnel, dive, and equipment logs
Conduct routine audits of dive program records
Dive within the Aquarium in any role required for daily, preventative, and corrective maintenance of all exhibits
Act as a liaison between dive volunteers and husbandry staff
Participate in professional development to maintain the high standards set forth by the Aquarium Dive Control Board and a growing dive program.
Act as a mentor to other staff in the development of their knowledge base of diving industry standards, diving physiology, equipment and techniques to ensure the Aquarium's compliance with all relevant safety standards (OSHA, AAUS, AZ.A, etc.)
Assist with ordering equipment and supplies
Assist with the recruitment, training and management of volunteer divers
Interface effectively with supervisors and staff across all departments
Supervise, conduct and/or assist with the guest immersion dive program
Perform other duties as assigned
In the absence of the DSO, supervises: Aquarium dive staff and dive volunteers

Knowledge

Demonstrated ability act in a leadership role around diving practices
Demonstrated leadership experience of aquatic environments and judgment when working in habitats and with animals
Proficiency in online record keeping using Dive Program in the Cloud (DPiC)

Skills

Demonstrated ability to mentor others in diving equipment troubleshooting, repair, and service Demonstrated ability to train others in Full Face Mask and Surface Supplied dive operations Demonstrated ability to train others in the use of underwater cleaning tools and techniques
Skilled at clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media; engaging the audience and helping them understand and retain the message
Demonstrated leadership qualities while working with a diverse group of people including volunteers, staff and guests
Sets high standards of performance for self and others; assumes responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks
Ability to establish courses of action for self and others to ensure work is completed efficiently
Be able to read, write and speak proficiently and effectively while addressing staff, volunteers and guests .

Minimum Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old
High school diploma or GED required.
Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
Valid Florida Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire
Ability to complete a background check
Minimum 3 years working in a zoo or aquarium setting
Divemaster certification or higher
Current CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administrator certification, Instructor preferred Fill station operator
Visual Cylinder Inspector certification

Licenses and Certifications

Current Instructor level certification from a nationally recognized dive training agency. (preferred) Provide evidence of a minimum of 75 logged hours including 12 dives logged in open water dives within the past 12 months
Scientific Diver certification (AAUS or equivalent) preferred
Ability to train others on SCUBA fill station operations
Associate or bachelor's degree in marine science, biology, environmental science, occupational safety, or a related field preferred.

Physical

Must be able to pass a specific medical evaluation of fitness for diving within 30 days of hire
Must be able to pass swim and dive skill evaluations within 30 days of hire
Must be able to work safely around potentially dangerous animals and situations
Sitting, standing, walking - at least 4 hours per day
Bending/stooping, climbing ladders - frequently
Kneeling/squatting, reaching above shoulders occasionally
Coping with demands (stresses that are associated with the job and/or the work environment) so that acceptable levels of performance and overall contribution are maintained.
Daily contact with a living collection of plants and animals in a central Florida climate
Ability to travel (car, boat, plane, truck) as needed - locally and/or nationally
Flexibility in working weekends, evenings and holidays
Must be able to lift 70 pounds on a daily basis and to physically perform laborious tasks in hot, Florida summers and within exhibits

Working Hours

Normal hours are: 9 hour shifts with one hour for lunch. Start and end times may vary by day based on the needs of the program. Weekend and holiday shifts will be expected. Occasional longer daily hours or evening hours may be required to complete specific tasks.
