Full Job Description

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is seeking an early-career Science Communications

Coordinator to advance our mission through reporting, writing, editing and fact checking content

for a wide range of platforms and publications managed by the Community Relations &

Communications (CRC) team. This position enhances Mote’s reputation, integrity and

partnerships, supporting the institutional goals of: 1) promoting Mote as a world-class marine

research institution, 2) generating attendance for Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA),

Education programs and events, and 3) supporting fundraising efforts.

As a Science Communications Coordinator, your written content will empower the public,

donors, Mote Members and other audiences of all ages and backgrounds to understand and

support our mission of marine science, education and conservation. Your work will be featured

in exhibits viewed by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year at Mote SEA, in flagship

publications such as Mote Magazine and Mote’s Annual Report, on Mote’s website, marketing

and fundraising campaigns, informational handouts, flyers and more.

The ideal candidate has journalism training or similar experience, ease with interpreting

complex scientific subject matter, and a commitment to accuracy, accessibility, and impact. The

ideal candidate is also excited to continue developing new skill sets, to partner with other writers

and visual content producers, and to be a supportive member of this close-knit team that cares

deeply about Mote’s mission.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

● Serve as an “internal journalist” and copywriter within CRC’s Creative Services team,

pitching, reporting, writing and measuring the impacts of interpretive, educational,

marketing and fundraising content.

● Build strong internal relationships with subject matter experts and peers across multiple

departments—including Research, Education, the public Mote Science Education

Aquarium (SEA), Development (fundraising), Events and others—to support effective

and efficient content development and distribution.

● Edit and fact check content generated by others. Review for grammar, apply Mote style

and branding guidelines, and above all, ensure accuracy and the use of expert sources.

● Develop and adapt content for multiple audiences and channels to increase audience

access, understanding and engagement.

Content may include but is not limited to:

○ Science and education-focused features, infographic copy, and other

mission-focused narratives in Mote Magazine and Mote’s Annual Report

○ Ads promoting Mote SEA, Mote’s educational programs and events, and Mote’s

mission

○ Mote SEA exhibit content highlighting marine life and Mote science for all ages

○ Website updates for departments across Mote

○ Fundraising campaign copy

○ Internal communications guidelines/resources to help Mote staff serve as brand

ambassadors

○ Metadata for Mote’s digital assets

○ Animal species bios for Mote’s online Animal Encyclopedia

● Undertake continuing education in technical tools to streamline and measure the impacts

of the Creative Services team’s projects—including but not limited to analytics tools and

the appropriate use of AI in writing, editing and research.

● Other duties as needed to support your fellow CRC staff.

Qualifications

Required:

● Four-year college degree in journalism, science communication, English,

communications, marine/environmental science, or a closely related field

● Demonstrated ability to report and write clearly and compellingly on complex subjects,

with published clips or portfolio samples

● Strong interviewing, fact-checking, researching and editing skills

● Exceptional organization and communications skills and the ability to manage multiple

projects under deadline

● Familiarity with common word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation software (e.g.

Microsoft Office, Google Docs/Slides/Sheets) with the ability to adapt to our use of

project management and productivity software (ClickUp, Asana, etc.)

Preferred:

● Previous work or internship experience in science communications, science journalism,

interpretive writing for science-focused exhibits, or life sciences fields

● Familiarity with web content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and basic SEO

principles

● Experience with writing for both print and digital formats and adapting content for a wide

variety of pieces from long-form storytelling to concise ad copy

● Experience with or demonstrated aptitude for digital analytics and performance

monitoring tools (for example, Google Analytics, Google Search Console)

● Demonstrated passion for marine science, conservation and supporting ocean literacy in

society

● Dive certification and/or comfort with travel and boat time for occasional field reporting

● Bilingual

● Photography / videography experience

● Familiarity with AP Style and/or applying brand guidelines and brand voice to writing

projects

Pay: $47,507.00 per year
