Full Job Description

The Director of Nursing (DON) for Bedded Programs
Full Time (40 hours per week)
Schedule: Monday through Fridays, Hours TBD
Location: Hornell, NY or Dansville, NY or Olean, NY.
This position is onsite 3 days per week and remote 2 days per week. There would be some travel.

The Director of Nursing (DON) for Bedded Programs provides strategic leadership, oversight, and direction for all nursing services within CASA-Trinity’s residential and inpatient programs. The DON ensures consistent delivery of high-quality, person-centered, and integrated care in compliance with regulatory and organizational standards. This position promotes safety, recovery, and positive health outcomes through collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and serves as the senior nursing leader responsible for program-wide nursing operations, compliance, and quality improvement.

The Charge Nurses report directly to the DON and provide day-to-day clinical supervision, staff coordination, and direct patient care within their assigned units. The DON focuses on system-level oversight, policy development, regulatory compliance, and nursing leadership, guiding Charge Nurses and nursing staff to maintain excellence in care delivery.

Essential Job Functions

Provide strategic leadership and overall direction to nursing services across all residential and inpatient programs.
Develop, implement, and monitor nursing policies, procedures, and clinical protocols to ensure safe, effective, and integrated care.
Ensure delivery of evidence-based, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented nursing services within an interdisciplinary model across all levels of care (residential, outpatient, OTP, and MH).
Collaborate with medical and mental health providers, as well as other nursing leaders, to ensure seamless continuity of care between programs.
Oversee medication management systems, including MAT and controlled substances, to ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations.
Provide clinical oversight and consultation to Charge Nurses and nursing staff regarding complex cases and specialized care needs.
Ensure all bedded programs meet regulatory, clinical, and operational standards for nursing services.
Monitor documentation and reporting for accuracy, consistency, and timeliness; lead participation in audits, reviews, and surveys.
Participate in Corporate Compliance, Incident Review, and Quality Assurance activities, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
Review and update disaster and emergency response plans for medical operations annually or as required.
Maintain expertise in and compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations (OASAS, OMH, DOH, DEA, SAMHSA, OMIG, HIPAA, 42 CFR).
Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives related to nursing and integrated medical/behavioral health services.
Serve as a clinical and administrative resource in the identification and resolution of complex nursing and interdisciplinary issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide direct supervision, guidance, and leadership to Charge Nurses and nursing staff across residential and inpatient programs.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff; foster accountability, teamwork, and professional development.
Oversee Charge Nurses in scheduling and staffing to ensure adequate coverage and continuity of care.
Review and approve staff timecards and time-off requests in accordance with agency policy.
Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and professional consultation to Charge Nurses and nursing staff.
Identify staff training needs and implement ongoing development programs to strengthen clinical competencies and regulatory compliance.
Conduct performance evaluations, manage disciplinary actions, and address performance concerns in collaboration with program leadership and HR.
Lead regular nursing leadership meetings to communicate updates, review performance data, and ensure alignment with agency policies and standards.
Ensure nursing practices and operations led by Charge Nurses consistently reflect organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

Secondary Functions

Maintain Qualified Health Professional (QHP) status as required.
Utilize the electronic medical record (EMR) system for oversight, reporting, and communication.
Serve as a nursing representative on internal committees and interdisciplinary workgroups.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong knowledge of regulations and standards governing residential and inpatient programs.
Familiarity with MAT, harm reduction, and integrated behavioral health models.
Ability to provide both executive-level oversight and clinical consultation as needed.
Competency in crisis intervention, emergency response, and infection control management.
Proven ability to lead and manage multi-site teams and maintain consistency in nursing practices.
Strong interpersonal, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to effectively mentor Charge Nurses and guide nursing staff to uphold quality and compliance standards.

Qualifications

Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Minimum 3 years of nursing leadership experience, preferably in substance use, behavioral health, or inpatient settings.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Primarily office-based with regular travel between program sites.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 20 pounds.
May involve irregular hours and exposure to individuals in crisis.
Adherence to CASA-Trinity’s tobacco- and alcohol-free workplace policy required.

Note:
The Director of Nursing (DON) serves as the senior nursing leader responsible for overall management, compliance, and strategic direction of nursing operations across all bedded programs. The Charge Nurses report to the DON and are responsible for daily clinical supervision, staff coordination, and direct care delivery within their assigned units.
