Opportunity Description

Seattle Central College is looking to hire a part-time Reference Assistant at the Broadway Edison library.

Salary Range for this position is $54,432 to $71,388 annually (depending on experience).

Opportunity is open until filled, first review of materials will begin June 12, 2026.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Dean of Libraries, Learning Support, and Employee Development. The Reference Assistant (LAPP2) is a part-time, cyclical classified position. This position contributes to student-centered library services to a diverse campus community. As a member of a collaborative team providing student-centered library services, this position works under the general direction of library faculty assisting students, faculty, and staff at the library reference desk. This is a pre-professional position designed for currently enrolled students seeking an MLIS. The RA works with librarians to provide research help and answers to common questions as the research help desk. Additional duties may include participating in library instruction delivery and design, reviewing and verifying title lists, creating and updating research guides and other instructional materials, recommending titles for purchase, and assisting users with technology questions. Additional special projects may be available, depending on the library¿s needs and the RA¿s interests and skills.

This position works at the Broadway Edison Campus (main library) 8 hours per week during fall, winter, and spring quarters. Summer work may be available. This position is limited to a maximum of 9 academic quarters, not including summer.

This is a temporary non-permanent part-time classified position not exceeding 18 months.

This position is part-time, working 8-16 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, primarily mid-day. This position works 100% of the time on-site.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.

Provides welcoming, effective, and timely research desk service;
Assists students with recurring quick information and routine reference questions on general subjects and in the use of information tools (e.g., print and online reference books, online catalog, periodical databases, Web, etc.)
Explains library procedures, rules, and service policy Refers students to appropriate librarians or technicians when necessary.
Under the direction of a librarian, provides general or subject-specific library instruction to classes.
Create instructional tools, including handouts, research guides (using LibGuides), and Canvas modules.
May assist with circulation service, acquisitions tasks, shelving reference materials, and other tasks as assigned.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

Current enrollment in a graduate program in Library and Information Science.
Interest in learning about community college and/or academic librarianship.
Proficiency in using standard office productivity applications, including email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive and effective relationships.
Demonstrated commitment to promote equitable access and service to a diverse community.
