Full Job Description

What We Seek

Gather seeks a motivated, mission-driven individual to oversee the daily operations of the Pantry Market in Portsmouth, ensuring the effective distribution of food to individuals and families in need. The Pantry Market Manager will report to the Associate Director of Operations and will supervise pantry volunteers, manage inventory, maintain a clean and organized space, provide assistance to members when needed, maintain shelf conditions at acceptable levels, and ensure all food distribution processes adhere to safety, health, and regulatory guidelines. This role plays a critical part in supporting the mission of Gather to alleviate hunger and promote food security in the Greater Seacoast.

Classification

This is a full-time, non-exempt/hourly position, with the expectation of working 40 hours per week.

General Responsibilities

Program Management:

Lead all daily operations of the Pantry Market, ensuring efficient workflows, exceptional member service, oversight of space utilization, and consistent program execution.
Lead staff and volunteers to deliver efficient service and a dignified shopping experience for all members.
Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), operational checklists, and program documentation to promote consistency and accountability.
Monitor program performance and recommend operational improvements
Collect and maintain program data and prepare reports as needed.
Coordinate with Operations to ensure adequate staffing, inventory flow, and space utilization.
Supervise, coach, and develop Pantry Market staff through regular communication, training, and performance feedback.
Promote Gather's mission, values, and commitment to providing dignified, equitable access to nutritious food.

Food Distribution:

Maintain accurate inventory records and communicate inventory needs to purchasing and warehouse staff.
Monitor product quality and ensure compliance with food safety regulations, organizational policies, and health department requirements.
Identify opportunities to reduce waste and maximize food utilization.
Monitor pantry presentation and adapt to changes in space utilization.
Coordinate with the other program managers to optimize inventory use, and efficiency between all programs.
Maximize food utilization by incorporating surplus or specialty items into pantry offerings, recipes, educational materials, or other program initiatives.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment for members, staff, and volunteers.

Volunteers:

Lead and support a diverse team of volunteers.
Provide volunteers with clear expectations, training, and ongoing feedback to maintain high-quality member service.
Collaborate with the Volunteer Department to ensure consistent coverage, including during absences or peak times.

Members:

Greet and assist Gather Members in a compassionate and professional manner, helping them navigate the Pantry Market and providing a welcoming environment for people from diverse backgrounds.
Ensure equitable access to food and respectful enforcement of pantry rules and limits.

Qualifications

Dedication and commitment to Gather’s mission and values.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable working with a diverse range of staff, volunteers, and members.
Organized, flexible, and proactive; skilled at managing competing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
Ability to problem solve and optimize product placement for presentation and ease of shopping for members.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks as part of daily operations.
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass and maintain various background checks.
Occasional weekend availability.
Serve-Safe certification a plus.
2-3 years' experience in a nonprofit or similar setting preferred.
Experience in retail food operations a plus.

Work Environment

This role is based out of Gather’s Portsmouth, NH facility, a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The Pantry Market Manager will be required to work both independently and collaboratively with a team. The role involves physical labor, including lifting, standing, and organizing food inventory.

Compensation

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with hourly pay commensurate with experience and skills, with an hourly rate of $27/hour. This position is eligible for health insurance benefits, 401K retirement plan, paid vacation, and holidays.

Pay: $27.00 per hour
