Summary:
Avante is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager hybrid role that also supports our estimating team. The Purchasing Manager / Junior Estimator will be responsible for sourcing materials, equipment, goods and services and managing vendors, while also assisting our Senior Estimator with quantity takeoffs, bid solicitation, and other pre-construction tasks. A successful candidate will be able to perform strategic procurement activities across multiple categories of spending, search for better deals, and expand our base of qualified suppliers, while also building a working knowledge of estimating and bid development. This is a role for a self-starter who can value engineer any project, negotiate the best possible deals with suppliers, and support the estimating process as workload demands. They will be required to liaise with project managers, the estimating team, and the field to identify, shop, buy, and track all materials needed.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with internal teams, in the office and in the field, regarding their supply needs and plan ahead to maintain project schedule
- Assist with the creation of material budget projections
- Compile, submit and track project submittals
- Ensure material orders align with approved project submittals
- Secure quotes from multiple vendors to obtain best pricing from suppliers
- Order materials for active construction sites and coordinate jobsite deliveries on a daily basis with the site supervisors
- Direct communication with the field regularly to anticipate material needs
- Maintain positive relationships with suppliers and continually build out network by researching new vendors / partners
- Negotiate storage with vendors as storage space on site is limited
- Track material lead times and communicate lead times to project managers and site supervisors - flag extended lead times when unanticipated
- Develop strategies that will optimize and create greater efficiencies in purchasing activities and processes
- Maintain supplier and purchasing records - follow up with bookkeeper to ensure timely and accurate payment
- Receive and distribute materials delivered to the office / shop
- Maintain in house material inventory, make best efforts to utilize excess non-returnable materials
- Reduce wasted material by accurately predicting needs or returning unused material where possible
- Assist the estimating team with quantity takeoffs by reviewing project drawings, specifications, and scope documents
- Support the bid solicitation and leveling process for subcontractors and vendors, identifying scope gaps and value engineering opportunities
- Help prepare bid documentation, including bid breakdowns and scope narratives, under the guidance of senior estimating staff
- Submit RFIs during the bidding phase to resolve scope ambiguities, and assist with maintaining RFI logs
- Attend pre-bid walkthroughs as needed to support site-specific estimates and gain field exposure
- Take on additional purchasing and estimating tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- Experience as a purchasing manager or in a similar procurement role in the construction industry
- Deep knowledge of inventory and supply chain management
- 1-3 years of estimating experience or direct exposure to construction bid processes preferred; willingness to develop estimating skills required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Experience with Sage Construction Management and Accounting Software preferred
- Experience with Procore Construction Project Management Software preferred
- Familiarity with E-takeoff or similar quantity takeoff software a plus
- Ability to accurately read and interpret construction documents
- Ability to negotiate prices, contracts, and payment terms with suppliers
- Ability to manage the procurement process for multiple projects simultaneously, and with multiple stakeholders, to ensure that materials and equipment are delivered on time, and keep projects within budget

Work Environment:
Purchasing Manager / Junior Estimator will work primarily from Avante's office located in Mamaroneck, NY, with the option for limited remote work.
