Job Title: Hematology Laboratory Supervisor

Location:Brooklyn, NY
Job Type:Full-Time
Salary:$120,000 – $140,000 per year (commensurate with experience)

About Us

Sherman Abrams Laboratory is a high-complexity reference laboratory in Brooklyn, NY, dedicated to delivering accurate, timely, and clinically meaningful diagnostic results. We foster a collaborative, quality-driven environment and are seeking an experienced Hematology Laboratory Supervisorto lead and oversee our Hematology operations.

Position Summary

The Hematology Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the Hematology department, with a strong emphasis on staff supervision, regulatory compliance, and technical excellence. This role requires deep hands-on hematology experience, including manual differentials, analyzer troubleshooting, and compliance with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements. The supervisor will lead a team of technologists and ensure the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and turnaround time.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the Hematology department, ensuring compliance with protocols, safety, and quality standards.
Supervise and mentor a team of clinical laboratory technologists, technicians, and lab aides, providing guidance and support.
Oversee routine and complex hematology testing, including CBCs, automated differentials, and manual peripheral blood smear reviews and differentials.
Ensure technologist proficiency in identifying abnormal cell morphology, flags, and critical findings requiring pathologist or director review.
Conduct staff competency assessments and ensure ongoing training and education.
Manage staffing, including scheduling, coverage, and contingency planning for the overnight shift.
Monitor and maintain inventory levels, ensuring adequate supplies for continuous operation.
Ensure proper operation of all laboratory equipment; coordinate maintenance and service as needed.
Perform supervisory review of laboratory documentation and ensure accurate record-keeping.
Investigate nonconformities, implement corrective actions, and recommend improvements.
Collaborate with the Quality Assurance department on quality improvement initiatives.
Conduct regular team meetings and actively participate in management discussions.
Ensure proficiency testing is conducted according to established procedures and policies.
Communicate operational issues to upper management promptly.

Education and Qualifications:

Active NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License (required).
Minimum of four years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, with at least one year in a supervisory role.
Demonstrated expertise in hematology testing, manual differentials, peripheral smear review, and morphology interpretation.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain a positive team environment.
