Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Product Development team. In this role, you will take technical ownership of the design, development, testing, and refinement of consumer products from early concept through production. You will work closely with industrial design, product management, manufacturing, quality, and overseas vendors to turn ideas into robust, manufacturable products while balancing performance, cost, quality, and user experience.
We design and create kitchen gadgets, culinary tools, specialty food storage containers, and other household items. Our brands are Prepworks, Prep Solutions, ProKeeper, SnapLock, and PL8. We are a small company with international reach, selling to the world’s biggest retailers. As an engineer you will see your work out in the world quickly and you will impact a wide variety of products ranging from mandolines, food storage containers, choppers and peelers to name a few. We have a hybrid in-office and work from home schedule.
We are looking to hire 2 candidates: one working from our Tukwila office and one working remote from other location.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering development of assigned products from concept through production and post-launch, taking ownership of technical decisions, deliverables, and issue resolution.
- Serve as a primary engineering contact across vendors, factories, and internal teams; communicate technical direction clearly and drive projects forward through the product development cycle.
- Collaborate with industrial designers and product managers to translate concepts into mechanically sound, manufacturable solutions using user-centered design, DFM, cost, quality, and reliability principles.
- Develop and review complex CAD models and assemblies in SolidWorks; optimize designs for functionality, manufacturability, aesthetics, assembly, durability, and cost efficiency, and provide peer review to other team members.
- Lead design feasibility, material and manufacturing process selection, tolerance analysis, risk reduction, prototyping, and hands-on testing early in development.
- Develop and execute product test methods; evaluate samples, identify root causes of failures, and drive corrective actions through design, tooling, material, or process changes.
- Create, review, and maintain engineering documentation including specifications, drawings, critical-to-quality requirements, performance criteria, tolerance requirements, and QA testing plans for factory and QA team use.
- Provide technical mentorship and constructive design feedback to junior engineers and designers, helping establish strong engineering practices and raise the technical quality of the team.
- Travel occasionally to factories and suppliers to support design reviews, tooling development, pre-production builds, testing, and issue resolution.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.
- 7+ years of relevant mechanical product design and development experience, preferably with high-volume consumer products.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, including complex assemblies, surfacing, multibody modeling, and robust parametric design practices.
- Strong knowledge of plastic and metal manufacturing processes such as injection molding, compression molding, sheet metal fabrication, die casting, machining, and related secondary operations.
- Strong working knowledge of tolerance analysis, GD&T, fits, clearances, and design for assembly/manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex mechanical problems, evaluate tradeoffs, and make sound technical recommendations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple development projects, prioritize competing demands, communicate risks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, overseas factories, suppliers, and leadership.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, 3D printing, testing, and basic shop equipment, with a strong interest in user-centered product design.
- US work authorization. No sponsorship is available.
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience providing technical mentorship, design reviews, and engineering guidance to junior engineers or designers.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), structural analysis, or other engineering simulation tools.
- Significant experience developing plastic consumer products and working directly with overseas factories through tooling and production.
Work Environment & Tools
- Office and Seated Desk Environment.
- Access to a basic testing shop setup and kitchen facilities (hand tools, small power tools, adhesives, sandpaper, scale, force gauges, weights, microwave, kitchen sink, etc.)
- Light prototyping tools including 3D printer (with access to factory equipment as needed).
