Full Job Description

Light Crew

Position Type: Seasonal Employment. Non-exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Description: Norfolk Botanical Garden is seeking festive team members to join our Light Crew for our famous annual Dominion Energy Garden of Lights event! This seasonal role runs from mid-August through mid-February and requires a flexible schedule to support the event’s different phases. Team members will work weekdays during setup and breakdown, and evenings, weekends, and holidays during the show season to help bring this holiday tradition to life.

Pre-Event (August – Early November): Required Shift: Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m., transitioning later in the season to 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Assist with the installation of outdoor lighting displays, event structures, extension cords, power supplies, and other event infrastructure throughout the Garden.
During the Event (November – January): Required Shift: Monday–Sunday, mid-afternoon through evening (hours vary based on event operations). Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot lighting displays and infrastructure, perform minor repairs as needed, and serve as a parking attendant during event hours to assist with guest traffic and safety.
Post-Event (January – March): Required Shift: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Assist with the breakdown, removal, organization, and storage of lighting displays, event structures, and supporting equipment.
Work closely with the DEGOL Manager to identify, report, and assist with repairs or other operational needs.
Maintain dependable attendance and flexibility with assigned work schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on Garden operational needs.
Assist with Garden-wide special events and perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Physical Functions:

Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must have the ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend, twist and/or stoop.
Must have the ability to push, pull and perform manual labor during working hours.
Must have the ability to work on ladders for extended periods.
Must have the ability to drive a golf cart.
Must be able to care for and have the ability to use all issued equipment such as: hand tools, hammers, safety belts/vests, safety glasses, etc.
Must be comfortable working in proximity to heavy machinery
Must be able to care for and have the ability to use all issued equipment such as: hand tools, power tools, safety harnesses and tethers, hard-hats, safety vests, safety glasses, etc.

Qualifications:

Schedule subject to Garden needs. Day shift, nights, and weekends required.
18 years of age or older with valid driver’s license & proof of car insurance required.
Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team, be self-motivated, and customer service oriented.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience operating heavy equipment and/or an aerial lift is a plus.
Experience with electrical, rigging, or carpentry is a plus.
