Overview
As a large, mature MSP, we provide technology services for national organizations, managing their entire technology footprint across the United States. This role will support a large retail organization: the Cisco Meraki network, the Microsoft cloud, the servers in every store, and the point-of-sale hardware that has to stay up. When a site goes dark, that store stops taking revenue inside a minute.
We are hiring an engineer to own that environment end to end. You will be the principal engineer on the account: you set the standard every market deploys to, you are the person their IT leadership trusts, and you are the last stop when something breaks that nobody else can fix.
What you own
The Meraki estate. Switching, wireless, and security appliances across the full retail footprint, managed from the Meraki dashboard, with the templates and tagging standard you define. Working with our security team, you keep the network and endpoint security posture current across the account.
Microsoft 365, Entra, and Intune. Identity architecture, hybrid identity and directory sync, conditional access policy, Intune device compliance and app deployment, Autopilot provisioning, and the Exchange Online, SharePoint, and Teams workloads underneath it. You are the person deciding how identity and device management work here, not the person implementing somebody else’s design.
Site server infrastructure. Every location runs on-premises servers, including a substantial video recording environment. Windows Server, virtualization, storage sizing, and retention are yours, alongside the Azure resources on the cloud side.
The endpoint and point-of-sale fleet. Registers, label and receipt printers, and the workstations behind them, refreshed at scale. You automate the driver, firmware, imaging, and configuration work so the next rollout takes a fraction of the effort — pushed to a nationwide fleet.
The projects and the playbook. Several site builds and refreshes, carriers and hardware vendors across time zones, work scheduled around store hours, local field engineers directed out of market.
Escalation and documentation. You are the escalation point for our Remote Services team on this account. You keep the environment documented — configurations, standards, and service records — so the standard you set is one other engineers can work to, and you provide technical guidance to the field and service desk engineers supporting the account.
The client relationship. Sit with their IT leadership, tell them what we recommend and why, then explain the same decision to a store manager in language that improves their business. Assess the environment on a regular cycle and surface the projects worth doing before they become problems.
What we need from you
- Five or more years of hands-on systems and network engineering, at an MSP or across a multi-site environment. A single-site internal role is usually not enough preparation for this seat. A bachelor’s degree in a technical field is desirable; additional hands-on experience substitutes for it.
- Production Meraki at scale. Be ready to tell us what you configured, across how many sites, and how you handled templates and tagging.
- Advanced Microsoft cloud depth — Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID, and Intune. Expect to be asked how you have handled conditional access, Intune compliance and app deployment, and identity design in production. This is a requirement, not a preference.
- Windows Server and virtualization — Hyper-V or VMware, Active Directory alongside Entra, and Azure IaaS — because the account includes real on-premises infrastructure alongside the cloud.
- Projects you owned end to end — scheduling, vendor coordination, cutover — and PowerShell and Microsoft Graph to automate your own repetitive work.
- Communication that works in both directions, with a client’s IT leadership and with a store manager, in writing and out loud.
- Disciplined time entry and documentation. This is a managed services business. Accurate time capture and current documentation are part of the work, not overhead on top of it.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for major deployments and site visits, roughly one week a month.
What moves you to the front
- Point-of-sale experience — label and receipt printers, peripheral troubleshooting, and how POS software fits together with the hardware under it. No specific platform required.
- A track record of automating device and peripheral configuration at scale. It is the single hardest thing to do well in a large retail estate.
- Video surveillance or NVR infrastructure in a multi-site environment.
- Kaseya VSA, or other RMM platform run at scale.
- Multi-site retail, restaurant, hospitality, or clinic environments, where an outage stops revenue immediately.
- Experience working above a service desk rather than inside one, setting the standard the tier-one team follows.
- Experience conducting network and security assessments.
- Current certifications: Meraki CMNA, CCNA or CCNP, and Microsoft credentials such as Azure Administrator Associate, Identity and Access Administrator, or Endpoint Administrator.
