Full Job Description

Job Summary:
The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) is seeking applicants for its Navigation Center Monitor position. NEOCH is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to eliminate the root causes of homelessness while loving our diverse community through organizing, advocacy, education, and street outreach. Center Monitors will play a key role in the operation of NEOCH’s Shelter program. They will support guests, create and maintain safe and clean shelter, monitor the shelter space, assist with meals and basic needs, and help create a trauma-informed, welcoming environment. Monitors are essential to ensuring safety, cleanliness, consistency, and dignity for guests for the duration of the guests’ stays.

Hours:

NEOCH’s Navigation Center operates 24/7, 365 days a year. The first shift is 7a-3p; the second shift is 3p-11p; and the third shift is 11p-7a. Weekends and holidays are required based on assigned shift. Replacement holidays are available to staff to use in place of holidays worked. Opportunities for additional shifts or overtime.

Full-time position available:

3 shift, 40 hours/week, Friday through Tuesday 11p to 7a

Part-time positions available:

1 shift, 24 hours/week, Monday through Thursday, 7a-1p
1 shift, 24 hours/week, Friday through Sunday, 7a-3p
2 shift, 24 hours/week, Friday through Sunday, 3-11p
2 shift, 16 hours/week, Friday through Saturday, 3-11p
2 shift, 24 hours/week, Monday through Thursday, 5-11p
3 shift, 16 hours/week, Wednesday through Thursday, 11p-7a
3 shift, 16 hours/week, Saturday through Sunday, 11p-7a

Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Basic Needs, Safety, Cleanliness, Rapport

Provide direct guest support, including intake, wayfinding, and basic needs assistance.
Monitor sleeping areas, restrooms, and communal spaces to ensure safety and respectful conduct.
De-escalate situations using trauma-informed approaches and assist in major incidents with support from the Shift Supervisor/Manager.
Distribute meals, hygiene supplies, and other essential items.
Clean and sanitize sleeping areas, restrooms, and communal spaces.
Uphold NEOCH’s values of dignity, compassion, and inclusion in all guest interactions.

Documentation, Data Collection & Reporting

Support accurate data collection and documentation using the Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) and any other electronic client record/database used for shelter operation.
Maintain detailed shift notes, incident reports, and communication logs.
Participate in weekly team debriefs and trainings.

Required Qualifications:

Experience in a direct service, shelter, or customer-facing role.
Strong interpersonal skills and cultural humility.
Ability to remain calm and grounded in stressful or unpredictable situations.
Commitment to housing-first, harm reduction, and trauma-informed practices.
Basic computer literacy
Availability for as assigned weekends and/or holidays

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity or willingness to learn HMIS data entry.
CPR/First Aid and Narcan certification (can be completed upon hire).
Lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity is highly valued.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive hourly wage for temporary seasonal role: $18/hr
Paid training period including CPR/First Aid, Narcan Administration, Deescalation/non-lethal restraint technique, Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, ServSafe, and HMIS
Weekly team debriefs and supportive supervision

Work Environment & Physical Demands
This role is based in a congregate shelter setting and may involve a mix of standing, walking, cleaning, and guest interaction throughout the shift. It includes regular engagement in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, particularly during guest intake and extreme weather emergencies. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. Reasonable accommodation will be made for individuals with disabilities.

Team members regularly work with individuals in crisis and may be exposed to environmental or health-related risks such as cold weather, pest control products, or infectious materials. NEOCH prioritizes staff safety and will provide training and resources to minimize risk and promote a trauma-informed, supportive workplace.
