Staff Pharmacist (Community & Specialized Non-Sterile Compounding)

Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented, patient-focused Staff Pharmacist to join our independent pharmacy team. In this role, your primary focus will be delivering outstanding clinical care through accurate prescription verification, engaging patient and provider consultations, and supervising our non-sterile compounding operations. A core responsibility of this position includes formulating customized, non-sterile compounded preparations across key specialties: Veterinary Medicine, Dermatology, Pain Management, and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT/BHRT). You will serve as a clinical resource, ensuring safety, quality compliance, and strict adherence to USP <795> and USP <800> standards across both traditional dispensing and specialized non-sterile compounding.

Key Responsibilities

Prescription Verification & Safety: Conduct thorough clinical verification for commercial and custom non-sterile compounded prescriptions, ensuring proper dosing, ingredient compatibility, therapeutic appropriateness, and safety protocols prior to dispensing.
Specialized Non-Sterile Compounding: Oversee and prepare high-quality custom formulations tailored to specific clinical specialties:
Veterinary Compounds: Formulate species-specific strengths, specialized delivery forms (e.g., transdermal gels, oral suspensions), and custom flavorings (e.g., chicken, beef, tuna) while strictly avoiding animal-toxic excipients.
Dermatology Compounds: Prepare custom topical formulations (e.g., barrier creams, targeted serums, specialized ointment/gel bases) for conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, and scar therapy.
Pain Management Compounds: Formulate targeted topical/transdermal gels, creams, and oral dosage forms combining active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for localized, non-systemic pain relief.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT/BHRT): Formulate customized bioidentical hormone therapy preparations (e.g., creams, troches, capsules) based on individual patient lab results and prescriber orders.
USP <795> & USP <800> Compliance & Safety: Enforce full regulatory compliance with USP <795> non-sterile compounding quality standards and USP <800> hazardous drug handling guidelines. Ensure proper engineering controls (e.g., negative pressure containment, containment ventilated enclosures), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) utilization, safe storage, wipe sampling, containment, decontamination, disposal, and documentation for hazardous active ingredients.
Patient & Provider Consultation: Counsel patients, pet owners, and prescribers on proper administration methods, precise dosing mechanics, expected outcomes, potential side effects, handling precautions for hazardous formulations, and beyond-use dates (BUDs). Collaborate closely with physicians, dermatologists, pain specialists, and veterinarians.
Quality Assurance & Workflow Supervision: Maintain Master Formulation Records, Compounding Records, equipment calibration logs, cleaning schedules, and BUD determinations. Direct daily pharmacy technician workflow, maintaining rigorous quality control checks and safety standards throughout production.
Inventory & Regulatory Control: Manage raw bulk chemical (API) inventory, hazardous chemical handling safety data sheets (SDS), specialized equipment maintenance, and controlled substance recordkeeping.

Qualifications

Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.S. Pharm.) from an accredited ACPE institution.
Licensure: Active, unencumbered Pharmacist license in good standing in the state of Virginia.
Certifications: Active Immunization Certification and CPR/BLS certification preferred. Formal compounding training (e.g., PCCA, ACA, or accredited USP <795>/<800> coursework) is desirable.
Skills & Experience:
Prior experience in community pharmacy operations and non-sterile compounding preferred.
In-depth practical knowledge of USP <795> non-sterile compounding regulations and USP <800> hazardous drug safe-handling protocols.
Direct experience or clinical interest in veterinary, dermatological, pain management, and BHRT compounding.
Hands-on familiarity with compounding containment equipment (e.g., containment hoods, containment ventilated enclosures, electronic mortar & pestles, ointment mills, precision applicators).
Strong pharmaceutical calculation skills and exceptional attention to detail during verification and formulation review.
Superior verbal and written communication skills for patient/pet-owner counseling and prescriber collaboration.

Schedule & Benefits

Job Type: full-time
Hours Of Operation: Monday - Friday 9AM to 5PM. No WEEKENDS
Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with compounding experience and clinical expertise
