Victim Assistant

11th Judicial District Attorney – Salida, CO 81201

Job description:

Under limited supervision, provides human services, support, education, and guidance to crime victims and witnesses throughout the prosecutorial phase of the criminal justice system for the District Attorney's Office serving Chaffee and Park Counties. Responsibilities include preparing victims and witnesses for trial, providing or coordinating support services that promote emotional healing, explaining case-related processes, and serving as a liaison among victims, witnesses, prosecutors, and other law enforcement personnel. Works closely with other Victim Advocates to maintain case coverage. Reports to the Victim/Witness Administrator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following essential job functions and duty examples are illustrative and not exhaustive; employees in this classification may not perform every duty listed.

Contact victims and witnesses after reviewing case reports and dockets.

Provides advocacy and support to victims, witnesses, and families, including accompanying them to court, explaining the judicial process, answering related questions, and providing follow-up services.

Assists with required forms and reports; forwards them to appropriate officials and agencies; and maintains case records, files, and statistical information in the judicial database.

Arrange interpreters for victims and witnesses when needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

2–3 years of experience in social work, criminal justice, victim advocacy, human services, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and temperaments.
Ability to remain calm, professional, patient, and adaptable in high-stress situations, particularly when working with individuals who may be experiencing emotional distress or crisis.
Strong computer and data-entry skills, with the ability to quickly learn and navigate new databases and case-management systems.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to gather information, identify issues, establish facts, and make sound conclusions.
Knowledge of community resources and support services available to victims and their families.
Understanding of the effects of abuse, trauma, and victimization on individuals, children, families, and communities.
Familiarity with the Colorado Victim's Rights Amendment (VRA) and the rights and protections afforded to victims of crime.
Demonstrated ability to interact with individuals experiencing emotional distress with patience, empathy, tact, and compassion.
Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries while working with victims, families, attorneys, law enforcement, and court personnel.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in an office and courtroom setting and involves mostly sedentary work. Occasional light lifting may be required. The 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office promotes work-life balance and a family-friendly workplace.

The position is FLSA non-exempt and grant funded, with a starting salary of $43,500 annually plus mileage. The position is in person.

Pay: $42,500.00 - $43,500.00 per year
