Full Job Description

Position Overview

The Victim Assistance Coordinator provides compassionate, comprehensive support, crisis intervention, and legal advocacy to crime victims and witnesses as they navigate the criminal justice system. Serving as a critical liaison between victims, law enforcement, prosecutors, and community organizations, this role ensures that victims’ constitutional rights are protected, their immediate physical and emotional needs are met, and they receive the state and federal restitution they are entitled to. This position also oversees vital grant administration, data tracking, and community training.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Crisis Intervention & Emotional Support

Immediate Crime Victim Support: Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, suicide awareness/prevention, and temporary stabilization counseling following trauma, serious injury, or a fatality
Long-Term Well-being: Refer short-term grief, bereavement, and trauma-informed counseling to help victims process the emotional and physical aftermath of victimization

2. Criminal Justice Advocacy & Court Support

Case Navigation & Education: Guide victims and witnesses through the complexities of the criminal justice systems and processes; explain courtroom procedures, trial expectations, and the mechanics of testifying
Case Tracking & Communication: Establish initial contact after charges are filed and maintain a proactive line of communication, keeping victims thoroughly informed of case updates, suspect arrests/releases, and final dispositions
Court Accompaniment: Accompany victims to court hearings, interviews, and meetings with defense attorneys or prosecutors, acting as a liaison to ensure the victim's voice and opinions are integrated into trial preparation
Victim Impact & Legal Protection: Assist victims in drafting and submitting Victim Impact Statements and upholding their rights under the Mississippi Crime Victim's Bill of Rights

3. Practical Resource Coordination & Financial Claims

Victim Compensation: Educate victims on state and federal Crime Victim Compensation programs and assist with application completion, documentation gathering, submission, and the appeals process
Restitution Verification: Guide victims through document collection to request criminal restitution from defendants and collaborate with stakeholders to monitor compliance

4. Grant Administration, Data Management & Compliance

Grant Oversight: Oversee and monitor state/federal grant compliance, ensuring strict adherence to fiscal and operational program requirements
Reporting & Analytics: Maintain and compile detailed demographic logs, case management databases, and victim service statistics. Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and statistical reports for state and federal review

Job Qualifications & Competencies

Ethics & Confidentiality: Absolute commitment to the highest ethical standards, maintaining strict client confidentiality, fairness, and unwavering respect for the dignity of victims and witnesses.
Trauma-Informed Care: Advanced understanding of trauma-informed practices, de-escalation techniques, and biological-psychological-social support mechanisms.
Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to handle emotional, high-stress situations with empathy, clarity, and professionalism over the phone, via written notifications, or in person
Adaptability: Ability to manage a complex, multi-layered caseload, maintain meticulous database logs, and adapt to changing legal statutes and system protocols.

Computer Skills: Proficient in basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office.

Pay: $70,000.00 per year
