Job Title: Special Education Coordinator (K–12)

Reports To: Executive Diverse Learners and Whole Child Support

Contract Length: 252 Days

Primary Job Function:

The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ Special Education Coordinator (K–12) is responsible for working closely with the Director of Special Education to develop, implement, and sustain high-quality, inclusive programs and services for students with disabilities across elementary and secondary levels. This role provides districtwide leadership, instructional guidance, and compliance oversight to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate services and supports aligned to their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), fostering an environment where every learner can thrive.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Ohio Administrative License (e.g., Principal, Pupil Services, or Superintendent).
Valid Ohio Teaching License in Special Education or Pupil Services license.
Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in special education.
Must pass a criminal background check (BCI/FBI).

Preferred Qualifications:

Five (5) or more years of experience in special education administration.
Experience providing district- or building-level leadership across multiple grade spans (K-12).
Proven track record in conflict resolution and Facilitated IEP (FIEP) processes.
Experience with curriculum development for inclusive classrooms, grant proposal writing, or higher education partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Primary functions may include the following duties, responsibilities, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification.

Program Coordination

Coordinate special education programming and service delivery across all K–12 schools to ensure alignment with district goals.

Service Delivery Oversight

Ensure appropriate delivery of special education services in accordance with students' IEPs and least restrictive environment requirements.

Compliance Auditing

Conduct IEP verifications to ensure compliance with processes, procedures, and delivery of specially designed instruction and related services.

Staff Development and Coaching

Provide training, coaching, and technical assistance to staff including case managers, Intervention Specialists, general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and support professionals.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure district compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations (such as IDEA and Section 504) related to students with disabilities and those suspected of having a disability.

Policy Implementation

Assist in the development and implementation of district procedures and policies related to identification, evaluation, placement, and service delivery.

Curriculum Development

Coordinate the design, modification, and delivery of specialized curricula tailored to students' individual needs, ensuring accessibility and engagement in inclusive classrooms.

Project Management and Innovation

Lead project management efforts for district-wide special education initiatives, administrative projects, and research-based continuous improvement efforts.

Budgetary and Grant Management

Make budgetary and staffing recommendations related to special education programs and oversee grant proposal writing to secure additional funding for innovative initiatives.

Higher Education Partnerships

Support partnerships with universities to coordinate research opportunities, student teaching placements, and university-based training programs for staff.

Stakeholder Communication

Communicate effectively with families, educators, administrators, and external agencies regarding special education processes, including referrals, evaluations, annual reviews, and re-evaluations.

Relationship Building

Develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with families, staff, and community partners to promote student success and well-being.

Monitoring Support

Support and participate in districtwide internal monitoring processes to track program efficacy and compliance.

Transportation Collaboration

Collaborate with the transportation department to secure and maintain appropriate transportation services for students with disabilities.

Talent Acquisition and Retention

Partner with building principals and the Human Resources department to support the recruitment, hiring, staffing, selection, and retention of special education personnel.

Systems Support

Assist in the development and implementation of district MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) and PBIS frameworks, ensuring system fidelity and compliance.

Personnel Evaluation

Evaluate special education staff as outlined in the negotiated agreement.

Outplacement Coordination and Provider Relations

Collaborate with building teams, district leadership, and external providers regarding outplaced students, related services, and out-of-district facilities.

Behavioral Management

Support the development of behavioral management systems, including mental health partnerships and student therapeutic supports.

Scholarship Oversight

Help process Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Scholarship applications districtwide, including utilization of the Ohio Autism Scholarship portal.

Manifestation Determination

Help conduct and facilitate Manifestation Determination Reviews at the district level.

Inventory Management

Oversee and maintain an inventory of specialized special education equipment, assistive technology, and instructional materials.

Records Maintenance

Maintain the strict confidentiality of student and staff records in compliance with FERPA and IDEA.

Other Duties

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or appointing authority.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Federal and state special education law, including IDEA, Section 504, and applicable Ohio Administrative Code.
IEP development, implementation, and compliance monitoring processes.
Special education programming across the K–12 continuum, including least restrictive environment (LRE) requirements.
MTSS, PBIS, and multi-tiered systems of support frameworks.
Scholarship programs including Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Scholarship.

Skilled in:

Providing coaching, training, and technical assistance to diverse school staff.
Leading cross-functional collaboration among administrators, educators, families, and community partners.
Data analysis, research, and using outcomes to inform program decisions, resource allocation, and improvements.
Grant proposal writing and managing program budgets or staffing models.
Clear written and verbal communication with a broad range of stakeholders.

Ability to:

Manage complex, district-level systems and multiple priorities simultaneously.
Build trust and maintain effective relationships with staff, families, and external agencies.
Apply research-based practices and current legal requirements to program and curriculum development.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive student and staff information.

Working Conditions – The employee in this position may experience occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. The employee may also be required to interact with unruly children.
