Job Summary:
The Adult Education Instructor is a full-time instructional role that provides high-quality adult education, workforce readiness instruction, student assessment support, curriculum improvement, and outreach activities for adult learners pursuing High School Equivalency (HSE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), basic literacy and numeracy skill development, and career preparation. This position delivers classroom, small group, individual, and hybrid instruction; helps administer and interpret assessments used for placement and progress monitoring; contributes to curriculum refinement based on learner needs and performance data; and supports recruitment and outreach efforts that expand access to Adult Education and Work Readiness Academy services. The instructor reports to the Adult Education Instructional Lead and works closely with the Enrollment team, including the Enrollment Manager and Intake & Assessment Operations Specialist, to support smooth participant pathways from outreach and intake through assessment, placement, instruction, persistence, and transition.

Responsibilities:
Instruction & Student Learning
- Provide educational instruction to adult students in classroom, small group, individual, and hybrid/online settings across assigned content areas, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, computer literacy, workforce readiness, and/or English language acquisition.
- Develop, plan, and facilitate engaging lesson plans aligned with adult learning principles, Ohio ASPIRE standards, program curriculum, and workforce readiness expectations.
- Deliver student-centered instruction using differentiated strategies that meet the needs of adult learners with varying skill levels, learning styles, disabilities, language backgrounds, and support needs.
- Create and update individualized learning plans based on student goals, assessment results, progress data, and transition objectives.
- Coach and support students in setting and achieving short-term and long-term educational, career, and training goals.
- Maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, organized, and culturally responsive physical and/or virtual learning environment that promotes engagement, persistence, and success.
- Integrate digital literacy, employability skills, and real-world application into instruction to prepare students for post-secondary education, training, and employment.
Assessment & Placement Support
- Administer or support administration of assessment tools such as TABE, CASAS, CLAS-E, and other approved adult education assessments in alignment with agency and state procedures.
- Review, interpret, and use assessment data to inform instructional groupings, individualized learning plans, student goal setting, and program placement recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with the Enrollment Manager and Intake & Assessment Operations Specialist to ensure timely assessment scheduling, accurate placement, and smooth transitions from intake to instruction.
- Support pre-testing, post-testing, progress monitoring, and reassessment activities to document learning gains and student advancement.
- Maintain assessment security, testing integrity, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable policies, protocols, and reporting requirements.
- Share assessment insights with program leadership and colleagues to inform instructional supports, retention strategies, and participant progression.
Curriculum Development & Improvement
- Contribute to the review, refinement, and modification of curriculum, lesson materials, pacing guides, and instructional resources to improve learner engagement and outcomes.
- Use student performance data, assessment trends, participant feedback, and classroom observations to recommend instructional improvements and curriculum adjustments.
- Collaborate with the Adult Education Instructional Lead and other instructional staff to align curriculum across Adult Education and Work Readiness Academy offerings where appropriate.
- Adapt and contextualize curriculum to reflect participant interests, workforce pathways, employer expectations, and post-secondary transition goals.
- Support development of supplemental instructional materials, intervention strategies, and enrichment opportunities for students with differing academic and career readiness needs.
- Stay current on promising practices in adult education, ESOL, workforce readiness, and contextualized learning and apply them to curriculum improvement efforts.
Recruitment, Outreach & Enrollment Collaboration
- Support recruitment and outreach efforts designed to increase awareness of Adult Education and Work Readiness Academy opportunities among prospective participants and referral partners.
- Participate in community events, orientations, information sessions, partner meetings, and other outreach activities to promote programs and engage potential learners.
- Communicate program information clearly to prospective participants, including program expectations, instructional options, assessment requirements, and next steps for enrollment.
- Collaborate with the Enrollment team to reinforce participant follow-up, reduce barriers to enrollment, and improve conversion from interest to attendance.
- Help identify outreach trends, learner questions, and enrollment barriers and share recommendations with program and enrollment leadership.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with internal staff, community partners, and referral sources in support of consistent participant pipelines.
Student Support, Documentation & Data Management
- Monitor student progress through formative assessment, attendance review, portfolio evidence, competency tracking, and regular communication with participants.
- Provide regular feedback to students regarding progress, strengths, barriers, and strategies for continued improvement.
- Complete required documentation, reports, attendance records, and student files in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with program, state, and funder requirements.
- Enter and maintain student data, attendance, assessment information, progress notes, and outcomes into required systems.
- Create and maintain student portfolios, both physical and digital, documenting work, progress, assessments, and milestones.
- Refer students to internal and external resources, including support services, career coaching, testing services, and community-based assistance as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with agency policy and applicable regulations.
Professional Development & Program Engagement
- Participate in required professional development, training, staff meetings, and agency initiatives as assigned.
- Collaborate with colleagues across instruction, enrollment, workforce, and support services to improve participant experience and program quality.
- Assist with special projects and events such as orientations, graduations, learner celebrations, and program improvement initiatives.
- Stay current with Ohio ASPIRE requirements, adult education standards, assessment practices, and workforce development trends.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in education, adult education, TESOL, English, mathematics, workforce development, counseling, or a related field preferred; candidates with strong experience in adult instruction, coaching, or workforce training will be fully considered based on skills and results, even without a traditional degree.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of teaching, training, instructional support, or related experience with adult learners, secondary students, or workforce development participants preferred.
- Experience teaching adult education, ESOL, High School Equivalency preparation, workforce readiness, or contextualized learning strongly preferred.
- Experience administering, supporting, or interpreting assessments such as TABE, CASAS, CLAS-E, WorkKeys, or similar tools preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to use assessment and student performance data to inform instruction and support learner progression.
- Experience contributing to curriculum design, revision, or instructional improvement preferred.
- Experience participating in outreach, recruitment, community engagement, or enrollment-related activities preferred.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage adult learners, explain concepts clearly, and build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and community partners.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, virtual learning tools, and data systems; experience with CRM systems preferred.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practices in service delivery.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for instruction, recruitment, outreach, or program events.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance preferred.
- Ability to speak languages in addition to English preferred.
