Clinical Nurse Educator

Job Type: Full-Time
Department: Nursing Education / Staff Development
Reports To: Staff Development Director

Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse Educator is a registered nurse with demonstrated clinical expertise and competent experience in an acute care setting. This position works independently with limited oversight from the Staff Development Director and is responsible for promoting clinical competency, professional development, evidence-based practice, and high-quality patient care outcomes.

The Clinical Nurse Educator's practice aligns with the Association for Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Scope and Standards of Practice and incorporates the roles of learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, partner for practice transitions, and advocate for the NPD specialty.

The Clinical Nurse Educator utilizes the nursing process to assess clinical practice gaps, identify learning needs, facilitate positive learning environments, implement educational strategies, and evaluate outcomes. Responsibilities include staff onboarding and orientation, competency management, department-specific education, AHA life-support compliance, evidence-based practice and research initiatives, professional role development, mentorship, student placement support, and other educational activities.

The Clinical Nurse Educator works collaboratively with nursing leadership, clinical staff, and interdisciplinary teams and participates in organizational committees, including unit practice councils, risk management, quality improvement, ethics, and infection prevention.

Essential Responsibilities

Assess clinical practice gaps and identify educational and professional development needs of nursing and clinical staff.
Develop, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate educational programs based on identified learning needs.
Facilitate staff onboarding, orientation, transition-to-practice, and ongoing professional development programs.
Manage and evaluate staff competency programs, including clinical skills validation and competency assessments.
Provide department-specific clinical education, in-service training, educational presentations, and on-the-job training.
Maintain and monitor American Heart Association (AHA) life-support and related compliance requirements.
Support the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP), research, and quality improvement initiatives.
Promote the integration of current clinical evidence and research into nursing practice.
Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development support to nursing staff.
Develop and facilitate staff role-development opportunities and educational offerings.
Support health-program student placements and facilitate appropriate clinical learning experiences.
Serve as a clinical and educational resource for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
Evaluate educational effectiveness and learning outcomes to promote safe, competent, and high-quality patient care.
Collaborate with nursing leaders and interdisciplinary teams to address practice issues and implement improvements.
Participate in the development and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, standards, and educational resources.
Participate in committees and organizational initiatives, including unit practice councils, risk management, quality improvement, ethics, and infection prevention.
Support organizational changes, regulatory requirements, patient safety initiatives, and clinical practice improvements through education and staff development.
Perform other educational support duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required QualificationsEducation

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure & Certifications

Current, valid, full, and unrestricted Professional Nursing License to practice in any state of the United States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Nursing license must remain current and unrestricted throughout employment.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
ANCC Nursing Professional Development (NPD) specialty certification preferred.
Candidates without ANCC NPD certification must complete a certification review course within six (6) months of hire and obtain ANCC NPD certification within one (1) year of hire.

Required Experience

Minimum of three (3) years of acute care nursing experience, such as:
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
Emergency Room (ER)
Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Post-operative recovery
At least one (1) year of clinical education and staff professional development experience within the past two (2) years.
At least one (1) year of verifiable experience providing staff orientation, educational presentations, or on-the-job clinical training.
