Assistant Controller

Company: Beak & Skiff

Department: Accounting

Reports To: Controller

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Summary

The Assistant Controller is a key accounting leader responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of Beak & Skiff's multi-entity business — from the orchard and manufacturing facilities through retail. Reporting to the Controller, this role ensures accuracy, compliance, and consistency across all accounting functions while contributing to the continuous improvement of systems, controls, and processes.

This is a hands-on leadership role that requires equal parts technical depth and collaborative instinct. The Assistant Controller will own critical accounting functions independently, serve as a resource for operations teams, and partner with the Controller and CAO on the work that keeps Beak & Skiff's financial infrastructure strong as the business grows.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Include but are not limited to

Financial Reporting & Close

Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting across all Beak & Skiff departments.
Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes in partnership with the Controller; ensure consistency and compliance with GAAP throughout.
Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts; own P&L accuracy across departments and entities.
Support the preparation of financial statements and reporting packages for leadership.

Internal Controls & Compliance

Evaluate and strengthen internal controls across accounting functions; identify gaps and implement improvements.
Develop and maintain SOPs for accounting processes, ensuring documentation keeps pace with business growth.
Support tax compliance and regulatory filings, including federal, state, and county requirements.
Lead or assist with intra-company and intercompany reconciliations and consolidations.

Systems & Process Improvement

Serve as a key user and resource for Acumatica; evaluate and implement workflow improvements, automation opportunities, and ERP enhancements.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, accuracy, and scalability as the organization grows.
Partner with the Controller and CAO on systems-related projects and implementations.

Operational Partnership

Serve as the primary accounting point of contact for operations, sales, and department leadership on day-to-day transactional questions.
Assist with inventory management, cost accounting, and margin analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making.
Collaborate cross-functionally to interpret financial results, support accountability, and connect financial data to business outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing or multi-entity environments.
Deep understanding of GAAP and internal control frameworks.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Acumatica or a comparable ERP system strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience supporting or leading close processes, systems implementations, or process improvement initiatives.
Strong communication skills with a proven ability to work across departments and present financial information to leadership.
Strong technical accounting foundation with the ability to work independently and take ownership of complex functions.
Highly organized and detail-oriented; skilled at managing competing priorities without sacrificing accuracy.
Analytical mindset — able to work through ambiguous problems, synthesize data, and recommend clear solutions.
Effective communicator who can translate financial information for non-financial audiences.
Comfortable in a dynamic, fast-moving, multi-entity environment where priorities can shift and resourcefulness matters.
Collaborative by instinct — builds trust with colleagues, department heads, and leadership through reliability and transparency.

Physical Exertion:

Light Work- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Work may include light lifting, carrying, and handling materials.

Environmental Conditions:

Indoor Work- Indoor environments may include exposure to temperature variations, such as unheated or non-air-conditioned areas.

Travel:

No Regular Travel- This position does not require regular travel.
