Director of Animal Services

Supervisor: Executive Director
Status: Full-Time/ Exempt

Job Description

Position Summary:

The Director of Animal Services provides strategic leadership for all animal-related programs at SafeHaven Humane Society. This position oversees animal care, medical services, behavior and enrichment, foster care, adoptions, and animal welfare programs to ensure the highest standards of humane care while maximizing lifesaving outcomes.

The Director of Animal Services leads the shelter team in creating exceptional experiences for animals, adopters, foster families, volunteers, and staff while ensuring that every decision reflects SafeHaven's mission and values.

Essential Responsibilities:

Animal Care & Shelter Operations

Provide leadership for all daily animal care operations.
Ensure the highest standards of housing, sanitation, enrichment, nutrition, and welfare.
Monitor shelter capacity and animal flow.
Develop and maintain animal care protocols.
Ensure compliance with all state and local animal welfare regulations.

Veterinary & Medical Services

Oversee medical treatment plans and shelter medicine protocols.
Collaborate with veterinarians and oversees medical staff.
Ensure disease prevention and biosecurity practices.
Monitor medical inventory and controlled substances.
Support spay/neuter and preventive care programs.

Behavior & Enrichment

Lead behavioral assessment and modification programs.
Develop individualized behavior plans.
Expand enrichment opportunities for dogs and cats.
Collaborate with trainers and volunteers to improve adoptability.
Promote Fear Free and low-stress handling practices.

Foster Care

Oversee SafeHaven's foster care program.
Recruit, train, and support foster volunteers.
Develop foster protocols and resources.
Monitor foster animal outcomes.
Expand specialty foster programs for medical and behavioral cases.

Adoptions

Oversee adoption counseling and placement decisions.
Ensure exceptional customer service.
Monitor adoption trends and outcomes.
Develop strategies to reduce length of stay.
Support innovative adoption promotions and events.

Leadership & Team Development

Supervise Animal Care, Medical, Adoption, Behavior, and Foster Care leadership.
Recruit, coach, and evaluate staff.
Promote teamwork and professional development.
Maintain strong communication across departments.
Foster a positive, mission-driven culture focused on compassion and accountability.

Animal Welfare & Strategic Planning

Monitor shelter statistics and lifesaving metrics.
Analyze outcomes and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Assist with budget development and resource planning.
Collaborate with community rescue partners and transfer organizations.
Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biology, Business Management, or related field preferred.
Minimum five years of leadership experience in animal welfare or shelter management.
Strong knowledge of shelter medicine, animal behavior, enrichment, and adoption best practices.
Experience supervising multiple departments.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
CAWA certification or willingness to obtain is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes and temperaments.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and emergency situations when needed.
Valid driver's license with insurable driving record.
