Job Title: Grant Writer

Reports To: Development Director

Afghan Health Initiative (AHI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering immigrant and refugee communities through culturally and linguistically appropriate social services, educational support, and health and wellness resources. Position Overview

The Grant Writer is AHI’s institutional fundraising specialist, owning the full grant lifecycle from prospect research through proposal writing, submission, and compliance reporting. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented, persuasive writer who can translate AHI’s programs and community impact into compelling, fundable proposals.

Reporting to the Development Director, the Grant Writer independently manages AHI’s grants calendar and institutional funder relationships, ensuring every proposal and report is accurate, timely, and aligned with funder requirements. This role calls for strong project management and relationship-building skills, juggling multiple concurrent deadlines, tracking compliance obligations across a growing portfolio of funders, and building the kind of trust with program officers that turns a single grant into a renewed, multi-year funding relationship.

Grant Research & Prospecting

Research and identify new foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities aligned with AHI’s mission and programs.
Build and maintain an up-to-date pipeline of prospective funders and grant opportunities.
Monitor funder priorities, guidelines, and application cycles.

Proposal Writing & Submission

Write clear, compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting materials for foundation, corporate, and government funders.
Own the full proposal development process from drafting through submission, keeping the Development Director informed of major opportunities.
Partner with Program staff to gather data, outcomes, and client stories to strengthen proposals.
Coordinate with finance staff to develop accurate grant budgets and budget narratives.

Grant Compliance & Reporting

Maintain and manage AHI’s master grants calendar, tracking deadlines, deliverables, and reporting requirements.
Prepare timely, accurate progress and final reports for funders in compliance with grant agreements.
Track grant awards, restrictions, and reporting obligations, flagging compliance risks to the Development Director.

Funder Relations & Collaboration

Serve as AHI’s day-to-day point of contact for institutional funders on grant-related matters.
Support cultivation and stewardship of institutional funders, including funder meetings and site visits as needed.
Partner with Program and Communications staff to gather data, visuals, and stories for proposals and reports.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, English, or a related field preferred.
2–4 years of grant writing or related nonprofit fundraising experience, with a track record of successful proposals.
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with strong attention to detail.
Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple deadlines.
Experience developing grant budgets in partnership with program or finance staff.
Familiarity with grants management or donor databases is a plus.
A deep commitment to AHI’s mission of fostering equitable access to health and social services.
Knowledge of immigrant and refugee communities, with a culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach.

Compensation & Benefits:

Annual Salary: $65,000–$75,000 commensurate with experience
Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance: AHI covers 99% of employee premiums
