POSITION OVERVIEW
The Controller serves as the senior financial leader responsible for the full scope of accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance across all business lines. Operating within a dynamic, multi-state environment spanning oil and gas services/construction, industrial construction, consulting, and specialized material rental, this individual will be a hands-on leader who partners directly with executive leadership to drive financial clarity and operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate brings deep technical accounting expertise, strong command of job-cost and project-based accounting, and the ability to operate strategically while remaining close to day-to-day financial operations. This role is critical to the company's growth trajectory and financial integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
● Preparation and delivery of accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
● Produce monthly financial packages including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and variance analyses for executive leadership
● Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial dashboards that provide actionable insight across all business units
● Implement and lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process; monitor actuals versus budget and communicate variances with clear explanations
Accounting Operations
● Direct all core accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations
● Manage the full month-end and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
● Oversee job-cost accounting for construction and field service projects, including cost tracking, billing, and project profitability reporting
● Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent coding across all business lines and states
● Supports IT interface with outside service provider
● Performs all HR activities and leads investigation and transition to an outsource provider
Internal Controls & Compliance
● Design, implement, and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure financial data integrity
● Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax filing requirements across multiple states, including sales and use tax, payroll tax, and income tax obligations
● Coordinate with external CPAs for annual reviews, audits, and tax preparation
● Maintain compliance with insurance and lender reporting requirements
Equipment Rental & Asset Management
● Oversee fixed asset accounting for a substantial fleet of rental equipment and owned machinery
● Manage depreciation schedules, lease/rental revenue recognition, and equipment disposition entries
● Support operational teams with utilization tracking, ROI analysis, and capital expenditure decisions
Cash Management & Treasury
● Manage daily cash position and cash flow forecasting to ensure adequate liquidity for operations
● Oversee banking relationships, credit facilities, and line of credit compliance
● Monitor accounts receivable aging and collaborate with operations to optimize collections
Leadership & Team Development
● Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team; provide ongoing training, feedback, and performance management
● Establish clear workflows and accountability structures within the accounting department
● Partner cross-functionally with operations, project management, and field leadership to align financial data with business activity
● Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the CFO/CEO/COO and contribute to strategic planning discussions
Systems & Process Improvement
● Own the company's accounting software platform and integrations; evaluate and implement process improvements and technology enhancements
● Identify opportunities to streamline close processes, reporting workflows, and operational finance procedures
● Support due diligence activities related to acquisitions, new business lines, or capital projects as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
● Bachelor's degree in Accounting (preferred), Finance, or a related field
● CPA designation strongly preferred
● 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 6 years in a Controller leadership role
● Demonstrated experience in job-cost or project-based accounting within construction, oil and gas, energy services, or a related industry
● Proven command of multi-state tax compliance and reporting obligations
● Strong proficiency with accounting software (Sage & QuickBooks Enterprise)
● Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, financial modeling, complex formulas)
● Deep knowledge of GAAP and the ability to apply technical accounting standards in a practical operating environment
Preferred
● Experience in equipment rental, heavy equipment operations, or asset-intensive industries
● Prior experience supporting external audits or lender reviews

Pay: $140,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
