$110,000 – $120,000 Annually

About This Opportunity

This is a confidential search for a well-established, growing company in the HVAC service, installation, and residential new construction space, based in the Albany, NY area. We're looking for a hands-on Controller who can own the books, develop the team, and give leaders reliable information about cash, job costs, and profitability. You'll work directly with the General Manager, project managers, and senior finance leadership to turn accurate reporting into practical business decisions.

The Role

Lead the accounting function behind our HVAC service, installation, and residential new construction operations. Reports to the General Manager, with accountability to senior finance leadership for financial reporting and corporate governance.

What You'll Own

Accounting and Close

Own the general ledger and month-end close in the ERP system
Prepare and review journal entries, payroll entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
Deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and reporting deadlines

Job Costing and WIP

Prepare complete monthly work-in-process (WIP) schedules
Reconcile job costs, contract values, change orders, and billings
Identify and correct costing errors and explain project margin variances with operations

Contract Billing and Project Performance

Oversee contract documentation and AIA billing
Analyze residential new construction results by project manager and help managers understand job profitability
Calculate quarterly incentives under approved plans

Cash and Working Capital

Manage daily cash visibility, bank reconciliations, receivables, collections, payables, and payment timing
Provide cash flow reporting to senior finance leadership and flag funding needs or collection risks early

Team Leadership

Supervise, hire, train, and develop accounting and administrative staff
Set priorities, clarify responsibilities, provide feedback, and ensure dependable coverage and completion of department deadlines

Additional Responsibilities

Controls and Assets

Maintain accounting procedures and internal controls; improve workflows and data accuracy
Lead physical inventory counts, reconcile inventory, and oversee financial records for capital assets and fleet financing, purchases, sales, and related documentation

Payroll and Benefits

Oversee payroll accuracy, deductions, recurring entries, and benefit allocations
Coordinate 401(k) administration, health insurance payments, and related reporting with HR, payroll providers, and plan administrators

Audits and Compliance

Coordinate financial, insurance, workers' compensation, and 401(k) audits and supporting schedules
Work with HR on workers' compensation reporting and with finance partners and advisers on payroll, sales, and income tax requirements

Business Partnership

Explain results, trends, and budget variances to leadership
Support senior finance leadership and the General Manager with budgets, forecasts, capital spending analysis, and special projects

Required Qualifications

At least two years of experience in job-cost accounting with WIP schedules and/or accounting within construction, HVAC, or home services
Hands-on ownership of the general ledger and month-end close in an ERP system
Direct supervisory experience managing accounting or administrative staff, with three or more years of progressive accounting leadership experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or substantial proven financial management experience
Strong GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliation, payroll accounting, and internal control knowledge; ability to prepare and explain job-cost and WIP reporting
Strong Excel skills, sound judgment, discretion with confidential information, and the ability to explain financial issues clearly to nonfinancial colleagues

Preferred Experience

Public accounting experience, ideally one to five years
Sage Intacct or ServiceTitan experience
Experience with AIA billing, contract accounting, and residential new construction profitability analysis

Success in Your First 90 Days

Produce complete and accurate monthly WIP schedules that leadership can rely on
Complete the monthly close accurately and on time, with reconciled accounts and clear supporting schedules
Build effective working relationships with the accounting and administrative team, General Manager, and senior leadership
