We’re seeking a skilled and organized Communications Coordinator to support our District and customers, with a focus on external communications, public relations, community engagement, and customer-facing messaging.
Position Summary
The Communications Coordinator will help Mustang communicate clearly and consistently with customers, employees, media, community partners, local leaders, and other stakeholders. The Communications Coordinator will assist with writing, editing, content development, social media, website updates, customer notices, newsletters, public education materials, media support, and community outreach. A key responsibility will be serving as the day-to-day liaison with our external Public Relations firm, helping coordinate timelines, gather information, route materials for review, track deliverables, and maintain message consistency. The ideal candidate is an organized project manager, strong writer, detail oriented, and service-minded communicator who can translate complex water supply, infrastructure, and customer issues into clear language for the audience.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilties:
- Content Creation: Develop, write, edit, and coordinate engaging communications to support all departments, including website content, social media posts, customer emails, newsletters, news releases, FAQs, talking points, public notices, presentations, flyers, community updates, internal communications, and intranet content. Help prepare customer-facing scripts, FAQs, and key messages for major initiatives, service updates, billing changes, AMI-related communications, conservation messaging, and emerging issues. Experience with Canva and email communications is required. Adobe Creative Cloud is a significant plus.
- Community Engagement: Engages with key community stakeholders. This includes supporting communications initiatives to foster positive relationships and build a strong community presence. Support community events, school visits, public meetings, open houses, stakeholder briefings, tours, and other outreach opportunities.

Internal Communication: Assist with internal communications to keep employees informed about company news and initiatives, including employee updates, leadership messages, talking points, supporting collateral, and process updates.

Public Relations Support: Serve as the primary day-to-day coordinator with the external PR firm. Help ensure agency-created communications are clear, transparent, accurate, consistent, and aligned with Mustang’s voice and public trust goals. Support efforts by helping to prepare press materials, monitor media coverage, coordinate responses, maintain media lists, and assist with pitches, interview preparation, and message development.
- Communications Management: Maintain organized communications files, content calendars, approval records, image libraries, project documentation, and media lists.

Monitoring and Analysis: Track basic communications performance, including social media engagement, email open rates, click-through rates, website activity, media coverage, recurring customer questions, and the impact of communication campaigns and activities. Provide detailed reports and insights to management to inform future strategies and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
- District-wide Coordination: Gather information from internal teams, engineers, consultants, and subject matter experts to support accurate messaging and public education materials. Maintain internal and external communications timelines, project trackers, approval routing, and deliverable schedules.
- Crisis Communication: Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining crisis communication strategies. Prepare statements and manage the organization’s response to crises, ensuring accurate and timely information is disseminated to stakeholders.
Perform other communications, public relations, customer experience, community engagement, and internal communications duties as assigned.
Position Specifications
This position is classified as Exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not subject to the organization’s policies and procedures pertaining to overtime hours.
Education

Required: A bachelor’s degree in Communication, Public Affairs, Marketing, or a related field; or equivalent work-related experience in lieu of degree.
Experience

Required: Minimum of 2 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or related discipline, ideally within a governmental capacity or for a utility. Four years preferred.

Technical Skill Enhancement: Pursue training in the latest communication tools and software, including Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Google Analytics, and stay updated with digital marketing techniques.
