Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician Job Description

As a Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a vital role in assisting ophthalmologists in delivering specialized eye care to children, while also supporting adult patients when needed. You will perform a variety of clinical and administrative tasks, including conducting diagnostic tests, documenting patient medical history, and ensuring smooth patient flow within the ophthalmology practice. This position requires strong technical skills, patience, and the ability to provide compassionate, child-friendly care. In addition, you will be cross-trained to support other areas of the clinic to ensure seamless operations and patient care.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Perform preliminary eye function testing, including visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and other diagnostic procedures, adapted for pediatric patients.
Conduct specialized ophthalmic tests such as tonometry, visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and lensometry, with techniques tailored for children.
Assist with patient medical history and documentation using electronic medical records (EMR) systems (e.g., Epic).
Prepare examination rooms and sterilize instruments following aseptic techniques.
Administer eye drops and ophthalmic medications as directed by the ophthalmologist.
Assist ophthalmologists with minor surgical and laser procedures in an outpatient setting.
Educate children and families on proper eye care, medication use, and post-operative instructions in clear and supportive language.
Provide compassionate, child-centered patient care, ensuring comfort and cooperation throughout the visit.
Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
Support efficient patient flow while minimizing stress and anxiety for pediatric patients and families.
Cross-train in other clinic areas such as scheduling, front desk operations, general ophthalmology, and diagnostic imaging, to provide flexibility and comprehensive team support.

Qualifications & Skills

Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician or relevant healthcare certification preferred.
Proficiency in conducting pediatric and adult diagnostic testing, as well as vital signs assessments.
Experience working in an ophthalmology practice or pediatric medical office is highly advantageous.
Strong knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, testing procedures, and EMR systems.
Familiarity with medical billing processes related to ophthalmic services.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff.
Patience, adaptability, and creativity in working with children of different ages and developmental levels.
Ability to cross-train and assist in multiple areas of the clinic as needed.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to multitask in a busy clinical environment.
Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently when needed.
