Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Oversee the operation of mechanical equipment and any fabrication as necessary, ensuring good operating condition of all cars, trucks, school buses, vans, etc. while maintaining a safe, operational environment for all transportation staff, students, and constituents.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Diagnose and repair all problems with school district vehicles and perform preventative maintenance procedures.
Perform all vehicle maintenance and repair tasks utilizing all safety protocols, tools, and equipment as provided by the transportation department.
Attend all in-service workshops and other departmental meetings scheduled by the Director of Transportation.
Attend and complete all vendor sponsored training and meetings, receiving appropriate certifications as a result of this training.
Maintain a high standard of safety and good housekeeping practices in all work-connected areas.
Maintain valid Class 7 PA Vehicle Inspector’s License to maintain certification to inspect school buses.
Serve as a substitute driver, aide or crossing guard as deemed necessary by the Director of Transportation.
Maintain confidentiality relative to workplace matters.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

One year experience in the vehicle maintenance field necessary

High school diploma or equivalent

Technical training is preferred

Current PA Commercial Driver's License with passenger and school bus endorsements, and air brake restriction removal is required

Knowledge and understanding of the mechanics and repairs of vehicles and various small engines is necessary

Safe driving record pursuant to the Transportation Department Staff Handbook

Submission of pre-employment medical examination (Section 148 of the Pennsylvania School Code)

Submission of a report of criminal history record from the Pennsylvania State Police (Section 111 of the Pennsylvania School Code)

Submission of a clearance report from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in accordance with Act 151 of 1994

Submission of Federal Criminal History Record in accordance with Act 114 of 2006

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to reach above and below the waist

Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects

Ability to use both hands for repetitive motion

Ability to bend, twist, kneel, stoop, climb, and crawl

Ability to lift/carry supplies weighing 75 lbs. or more

Ability to drive up to eighty percent (80%) of workday

SENSORY ABILITIES:

Visual acuity

Auditory acuity

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Ability to work in an external environment subject to temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees

Subject to outside environmental conditions

May be exposed to atmospheric conditions that include fumes and dust

TEMPERAMENT:

Must be cooperative, congenial, and service-oriented

Must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions

COGNITIVE ABILITY:

Ability to follow written and verbal directions

Ability to read and write

Ability to communicate effectively

Ability to organize tasks

Ability to exercise good judgment

Ability to utilize safe operating procedures in course of job duties

Ability to read and understand maps

SPECIFIC SKILLS:

Ability to work with students

Ability to work with a diverse group of transportation staff

LICENSE:

Must possess a valid PA Commercial (Class B)Driver’s License

Must possess a valid School Bus endorsement

(or ability to obtain same within 6 months of employment)

Must possess a valid passenger endorsement

Must possess a CDL B with air brake restriction removed
