Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Engineering and Computer Science teacher to lead our K–8 students. This role involves delivering engaging lessons that foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among diverse student populations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in science and mathematics, combined with a commitment to innovative teaching methods and curriculum development.

This is an hourly position requiring approximately 2–3 days per week.

It is a program stewardship role. You will be the school's sole Engineering and Computer Science instructor, responsible for continuing and evolving a rich, multi-year progression that takes students from paper folding and block coding in kindergarten to 3D printing, robotics, lego and circuit design by middle school.

Skills Needed:

Proven experience in classroom management and behavior management strategies for diverse student populations.
Skilled in curriculum development with a focus on integrating educational technology tools for enhanced learning experiences.
Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with colleagues, students, and parents.
Ability to adapt teaching methods based on different learning styles.
Strong organizational skills for managing multiple classes while maintaining high standards of educational quality; mentoring abilities are a plus.

CLASS STRUCTURE

Kindergarten: Two small back-to-back sessions (approximately 12 students each)
Grades 1–3: 8–16 students per class
Grades 4–5: Up to 24 students, 2-hour sessions
Grades 6–8: Up to 22 students, 2 hours and 45 minutes per session

Kindergarten–Grade 2 Foundation Track

Paper engineering: folding, cutting, and building 3D structures from single sheets of paper
Habitat design, balancing, levers, fulcrums, and engineering design challenges
Introduction to computational thinking using Scratch (motion, looks, sound, events, and control)
Simple machines designed, built, tested, and presented using real materials
Collaborative LEGO building and problem-solving activities

Grades 3–8 Progression Track

Continue Scratch game design using project cards, books, and teacher-led instruction
LEGO WeDo 2.0 integrated with Scratch for physical computing
Tinkercad:
3D modeling
3D printing
Tinkercad Circuits (block-based programming that naturally bridges Scratch to Arduino)
Jimu Robotics:
Programmed robot competitions
Team-based engineering challenges
LittleBits and Arduino:
Electronics
Breadboarding
Introduction to microprocessors
Physical fabrication and problem solving using clay, silicone, and two-part plastic molding
Design thinking:
Problem framing

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

The Engineering and Computer Science program blends structured curriculum with open-ended project work.Students don't simply learn tools, they use those tools to solve authentic engineering challenges. Every class builds toward something meaningful:
A game someone can play
A structure that supports weight
A robot that competes
A prototype that solves a real-world problemReflection and presentation are integral parts of the learning process. Students regularly present their work, explain their design decisions, receive feedback, and connect their projects to engineering principles.

The year culminates in a school-wide Engineering Showcase where students demonstrate polished projects to families, including live Jimu Robotics competitions with Scratch-powered scoreboards operated by students and parents.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for someone who:

Enjoys working with children from Kindergarten through Middle School.
Has experience or a strong interest in engineering, computer science, robotics, makerspaces, or STEM education.
Is comfortable learning and teaching a wide range of technologies and engineering concepts.
Can manage a workshop-style classroom where creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning are central.
Values curiosity, problem-solving, and student independence.
Is organized, flexible, and excited to continue building an established program.

Experience with Scratch, LEGO WeDo, Tinkercad, Arduino, Jimu Robotics, 3D printing, or similar platforms is preferred. Training on AIA's existing curriculum and materials will be provided to the right candidate.
