Full Job Description

Senior Scientist, Discovery & Translational Research | Durham, NC | Onsite

Opus Genetics is seeking a Senior Scientist to join our Discovery and Translational Research team in Durham, NC. This hands-on lab role will lead and manage research focused on retinal diseases and AAV-based retinal gene therapies through molecular and cell biology experimentation, disease modeling, and assay development.

AAV production is highly desired for this role

A Senior Scientist is responsible for leading and managing research programs and projects. This role requires outstanding research skills and expertise, the ability to mentor and manage a team of scientists, and effective communication and collaboration with external partners and stakeholders.

Ideal candidates will have:

PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field of science
Minimum of 10 years of experience in scientific research, with a demonstrated track record of leading and managing research programs and projects
Proven expertise in a specific area of scientific research, as evidenced by publications, patents, and/or other accomplishments
Effective leadership and management skills, with experience mentoring and managing teams of scientists in a research environment
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with external partners and stakeholders
Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, with the ability to design and execute complex experiments and data analysis
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines

Preferred experience includes:

Retinal disease models or retinal cell systems.
AAV or lentiviral vector experience.
iPSC maintenance, clone selection, and banking.
Gene therapy or potency assay experience.

This is an onsite opportunity for a detail-oriented scientist who enjoys hands-on research, collaborative science, and contributing to the development of potential retinal disease therapies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Develop and lead scientific research programs and projects, from conception to implementation, including defining research objectives, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and interpreting and reporting results
Mentor and manage a team of scientists, providing guidance and support for their professional development and helping to foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing culture in the research department
Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders, including academic and industry partners, to identify and pursue opportunities for research collaboration and funding
Ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards for research, including obtaining necessary approvals and ensuring the responsible conduct of research by all team members
Communicate research results through publications, presentations, and other means, to both internal and external audiences, and contribute to the advancement of the scientific community through participation in professional organizations and events

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Senior Scientist may potentially supervise Associate Scientist.

Pay: $140,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
