Overview

Kindred Church is a growing, contemporary United Methodist congregation in Durham, North Carolina. We exist to embrace people with the inclusive love of Jesus and help them take their next steps of faith.

We are deeply rooted in Scripture and the historic Christian faith while also being fully LGBT+ affirming and welcoming. We believe these commitments are not in tension, and we are passionate about helping more people discover a church community where they can experience both meaningful faith and authentic belonging.

We are seeking a Christian communications generalist who writes clearly, is digitally savvy, highly organized, and excited to help more people discover an affirming, Jesus-centered church. This is a production-focused communications role for someone who enjoys making communication clear, consistent, and effective across website, email, social media, Google Business Profile, and other digital channels.

Role Summary

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for executing Kindred Church’s communications, with a primary focus on expanding the church’s outward-facing digital presence. This role helps ensure that Kindred’s website, social media, newsletter, Google Business Profile, and other communication channels clearly and consistently communicate the church’s mission and message.

This person does not need to be an expert strategist, SEO specialist, designer, or social media expert. Kindred works with contracted partners for specialized guidance in those areas. We need someone with strong judgment, clear writing, digital comfort, attention to detail, and reliable follow-through who can execute the plan, keep communication channels current, and help Kindred communicate in its distinctive voice.

The Communications Coordinator also supports internal communication through weekly email communication, announcements, and other congregational communication needs.

Responsibilities

External Communications & Digital Presence

Maintain and update church website content
Make basic website copy, design, and formatting updates
Implement SEO updates based on guidance from external specialists
Maintain and update Google Business Profile
Publish blog posts, sermon-based resources, and other website content
Draft or adapt social media copy in coordination with contracted partners
Monitor website and social media analytics at a high level

Internal Communications

Draft and distribute weekly church email/newsletter
Support church-wide announcements and communication
Help ensure communication is clear, accurate, timely, and aligned across channels
Adapt messages for different audiences and communication formats

Contractor Coordination

Coordinate with website/SEO contractor
Coordinate with social media and/or creative contractors
Communicate priorities, timelines, and needed updates
Ensure communication aligns with Kindred’s voice, mission, and standards

Light Systems Support

Utilize Planning Center and related communication tools
Create and maintain forms as needed
Support simple, repeatable communication workflows
Help keep recurring communication tasks organized and on schedule

Strong Candidates

The strongest candidates for this role will:

Be clear and effective written communicators
Have exceptional attention to detail
Be highly organized, reliable, and self-directed
Have experience writing, editing, publishing, or coordinating communication for an organization
Be comfortable learning digital communication tools
Enjoy both writing/editing and recurring digital production tasks
Have good judgment about tone, audience, clarity, and visual presentation
Be personally comfortable communicating about Jesus, Christian faith, Scripture, worship, and spiritual formation from within Kindred’s basic Christian convictions
Be enthusiastic about helping communicate Kindred’s mission and identity
Find joy in helping newcomers discover Kindred Church and helping people take their next steps of engagement

Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
