Full Job Description

GMU Engineers and Geologists is an award-winning engineering consulting firm specializing in geotechnical engineering, pavement engineering, structural engineering, and construction observation and testing services. GMU has a 60-year history in Orange County and has worked on countless landmark projects throughout Southern California. We have a team of 50 employees consisting of engineers, geologists, technicians, and support staff. All operations are based out of our office in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.

Job Summary and Salary Range

We are seeking an experienced accounting professional to join our team as Accounting Manager. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of day-to-day accounting operations while helping improve financial systems and processes.

This full-time, in-office position is responsible for managing and coordinating Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, General Ledger, financial reporting, and accounting systems. Title, responsibilities, and compensation will be based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Accounts Receivable

Prepare and send client invoices for professional consulting services in time and materials (T&M), lump sum, and percent completion formats
Coordinate monthly project billings and serve as a financial resource to Principals and Project Managers
Track payment status and resolve discrepancies
Process customer payments
Provide account status reports to Principals and Project Managers

Accounts Payable

Process invoices received from vendors
Ensure accurate and timely payments to vendors
Enter and reconcile credit card payments
Maintain accurate financial records for payroll liabilities
Process 1099 tax forms for Independent Contractors
Work with the Payroll Manager to ensure payroll liabilities are accurately classified
Maintain organized records of invoices, payments, and supporting documentation

General Ledger & Financial System Management

Oversee the company's general ledger and ensure all financial transactions are accurately recorded
Perform and review bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
Prepare monthly financial reports for management
Support month-end and year-end close activities
Maintain, administer, and continuously improve accounting systems, workflows, reporting, and internal controls

Skills & Qualifications

5+ years of accounting experience required. Title and level of responsibility will be based on experience and qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Accounting management or supervisory experience is preferred
Experience with project-based accounting in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), consulting, or professional services industry is highly desirable
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint is highly desirable (or comparable ERP/accounting software)
Strong understanding of GAAP, accounting principles, billing cycles, contract terms and collections
Experience with prevailing wage payroll, certified payroll, or public agency contracts is a plus
Ability to learn new technologies and software quickly
Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines
