Application Question(s):
- Walk me through how you would manage a trans-Atlantic ocean import shipment from origin in Europe through final delivery in the U.S. What are the critical checkpoints you would personally monitor?
- Tell me about a time you identified a billing, AR, or profitability issue in an operation you managed. What did you discover, what actions did you take, and what was the financial impact of the improvement?
- You inherit a team that is processing shipments but is inconsistent, reactive, and dependent on a few experienced employees. What would you do during your first 90 days to build a stronger and more scalable operation?
- One of our most important European customers has several containers delayed at a U.S. port, and the customer is extremely unhappy. Senior management is asking you for answers, while your team is telling you they don't have enough information yet. Walk me through exactly how you would handle this
- You discover that one of your largest customers is generating significant shipment volume but the account is consistently losing money because of operational costs, carrier rates, and accessorial charges. What would you do?
- Your European office, U.S. operations team, carrier, customs broker, and customer all have different priorities regarding the same shipment. How do you establish accountability and make sure everyone is working toward the same outcome
- What KPIs would you put in place to determine whether an ocean import operation is healthy, and how would you use those KPIs to improve the department?
- One of your largest customers consistently pays late and frequently disputes accessorial charges. How would you determine the root cause, protect the customer relationship, and improve the account’s payment performance?
- What was the largest book of business you managed? Approximately how many containers per month, how many customers, how many employees, and what was the approximate annual revenue or value of the operation?
- How have you managed demurrage and detention across multiple ocean carriers? Please walk me through the process you would put in place to monitor free time, identify potential charges before they accrue, dispute incorrect charges, and hold the appropriate parties accountable. Additionally, which ocean carriers charge in-gate detention in addition to terminal demurrage/rail storage, and how would you ensure your team identifies and manages that exposure?
