Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Senior Geologist to lead exploration, resource development, and geological programs for a highly prospective mining project. This role will be responsible for exploration targeting, drilling program management, geological modeling, and technical leadership to support resource growth and project advancement.
This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a growing mining company, offering the chance to make an immediate impact on a promising project with significant exploration upside. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to advance discoveries, expand resources, and help drive the long-term success of the project.
The selected candidate should be willing to relocate to the Elko, Nevada area within 6 months to support the long-term needs of the project.
Key Responsibilities:
Exploration Strategy & Target Generation
- Integrate geological, geochemical, geophysical, structural, geotechnical, and assay datasets to identify and prioritize exploration targets.
- Generate and evaluate near-mine and district-scale exploration opportunities to support resource growth and new discoveries.
- Develop, maintain, and refine geological interpretations and geological models.
- Identify geological risks, opportunities, uncertainties, and data gaps that influence project advancement.
- Lead and support field mapping, sampling programs, geophysical surveys, and site evaluations.
Drilling Program Management
- Design, plan, manage, and oversee RC, core, geotechnical, metallurgical, and diamond drilling programs.
- Coordinate drilling logistics, contractor management, permitting support, and field execution.
- Ensure accurate geological logging, sampling, and data collection.
- Interpret drilling results and adjust exploration strategies based on ongoing findings.
Technical Analysis & Geological Modeling
- Interpret structural controls, stratigraphy, alteration systems, and mineralization styles.
- Perform advanced core logging, lithologic interpretation, and geotechnical evaluations.
- Develop and update 3D geological models using industry-standard software.
- Support resource estimation, model refinement, and resource conversion initiatives.
- Integrate geological data into exploration and mine planning workflows.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead day-to-day geological activities while ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop junior geologists, samplers, and technical staff.
- Review, validate, and approve geological logs, maps, interpretations, and models.
- Foster technical excellence and continuous professional development within the geology team.
Data Management & QA/QC
- Maintain rigorous QA/QC protocols for sampling, assays, and geological databases.
- Ensure chain-of-custody procedures, data integrity, and documentation standards are consistently followed.
- Validate geological and assay data to support reliable decision-making.
- Maintain timely updates of geological models and exploration databases.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with mine geology, resource modeling, engineering, survey, environmental, permitting, and operations teams.
- Support near-mine growth initiatives and resource development projects.
- Coordinate with regulatory, land, and environmental personnel to facilitate project approvals and compliance requirements.
Reporting & Communication
- Prepare technical reports, exploration summaries, presentations, and management recommendations.
- Communicate geological findings, risks, and opportunities to stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Support technical disclosures related to exploration results and mineral resources.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and MSHA standards.
- Identify, mitigate, and report safety and environmental hazards.
- Safely operate on-road and off-road vehicles during field activities.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mineral exploration, mining, or resource development.
- Proven success generating, evaluating, and advancing exploration targets.
- Experience designing and managing drilling, mapping, sampling, and geophysical programs.
- Strong geological interpretation and structural geology skills.
- Experience with geological data management, QA/QC programs, and database systems.
- Proficiency with industry-standard software, including:
- Leapfrog Geo
- ArcGIS
- Vulcan, Datamine, Acquire, or similar platforms
- Strong project management, contractor oversight, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication, technical writing, and presentation abilities.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to work safely in field environments and perform required physical duties.
Preferred
- Master's degree in Geology or related field.
- Professional Geologist (PG) certification or equivalent.
- Experience with resource estimation and resource modeling workflows.
- Experience with Nevada and western U.S. exploration environments.
- Experience with low-sulfidation epithermal gold systems, porphyry-related mineralization, and/or skarn deposits.
- Previous experience supervising geology teams and technical personnel.
- Surface MSHA certification.
