Retail Experience AssociateThe Inner Monologues
Eugene, OR – The Alley at 5th
Part-Time (18–36 hours per week)
$17.00–$20.00 per hour, depending on experience
We're intentionally paying above typical retail wages because we're looking for people who create exceptional customer experiences—not just complete transactions.
This Isn't Your Average Retail Job
Some stores sell products.
We create reactions.
People laugh here.
They point across the room and call their friends over.
They find the perfect gift for someone they love.
They discover something they didn't know they needed.
They leave saying, "I've never seen a store like this before."
That's what we're trying to build.
Before You Apply: A Quick Note From Us
We know how job searching can go. You open a dozen tabs, apply to a bunch of positions, hope someone responds, and then show up as the polished “interview version” of yourself. Honestly, we get it. Work is work, and looking for the right job can be exhausting.
But we also think hiring can be a little more human than that.
Our interview process is designed to feel less like an audition and more like both sides figuring out whether this could actually be a good fit. We’re getting to know you—but you should also be getting to know us.
That’s why we wrote this posting thoughtfully and clearly. Before applying, please take a few minutes to read it all the way through and decide whether the position, the environment, and what we’re building genuinely sound like something you might enjoy. If they do, follow the short How to Apply section at the end.
Applications that appear mass-submitted or skip the requested information generally won’t move forward—not because we’re trying to make anyone jump through hoops, but because we don’t want to waste your time or ours.
If you finish reading and think, “I might actually really like this,” we would genuinely love to hear from you.
The Inner Monologues is a creatively led boutique built around personality, humor, storytelling, expressive design, clever gifts, enamel pins, literary sarcasm, handcrafted products, and beautifully curated collections. Every corner of the store is intentionally designed to make people smile, think, laugh, or remember someone.
We believe shopping should feel more like wandering through an incredible art festival than simply walking into another retail store.
If that sounds exciting... keep reading.
About Us
The Inner Monologues is the newest concept from the team behind The Uncommon Collective and Timber & Flame, two successful artisan gift stores on the Oregon Coast.
We're still in the early chapters of building this brand.
That means your personality, ideas, and customer interactions genuinely matter.
As we continue growing into new products, wholesale, future stores, and exciting new concepts, we're looking for people who want to grow alongside us—not simply clock in and clock out.
Who Thrives Here
The people who love working here usually:
- Enjoy talking with strangers.
- Naturally smile at people.
- Love bookstores, art fairs, local markets, museums, gift shops, or creative spaces.
- Notice when something feels "off" and quietly fix it.
- Can tell a story about a product instead of simply pointing at it.
- Like helping someone find the perfect gift.
- Appreciate clever humor, pop culture, literature, handmade products, design, and creativity.
- Stay busy without needing someone to constantly tell them what to do.
- Take pride in making small moments memorable.
This Probably Isn't For Everyone
And that's okay.
Different people thrive in different environments.
If you're looking for a job where you mostly sit behind the register waiting for customers... this probably isn't your job.
If you're happiest avoiding conversations with customers... this probably isn't your job.
Our store is intentionally interactive.
We greet people.
We invite people inside.
We tell stories.
We recommend products.
We laugh with customers.
We help people discover things they never would have found on their own.
Every customer matters.
Especially in a small business.
Think More Like an Art Festival
Imagine walking through a local artisan market.
The best booths aren't the ones where someone silently waits behind a table.
They're the ones where someone smiles, welcomes you over, tells you about something interesting, and creates an experience you'll remember.
That's much closer to how we operate than traditional retail.
There will even be times when you'll step outside the storefront to welcome people walking by, answer questions, or invite them in. If that sounds fun rather than intimidating, you'll probably fit right in.
What You'll Do
Every day is a little different, but you might:
- Welcome customers warmly and naturally.
- Learn the stories behind our products so you can confidently recommend them.
- Help customers choose thoughtful gifts.
- Suggest products that genuinely fit what someone is looking for.
- Ring up purchases accurately.
- Restock merchandise.
- Keep displays looking beautiful.
- Learn new arrivals.
- Keep the shop clean, organized, and inviting.
- Help create an atmosphere people remember long after they leave.
Slow Moments Matter
Retail isn't only about the busy moments.
When the store slows down, the work doesn't stop.
We straighten displays.
Refill merchandise.
Learn new products.
Improve merchandising.
Clean.
Organize.
Notice details.
Find little ways to make tomorrow's customer experience even better.
Then, the moment someone walks through the door... they become our priority.
We Value Curiosity More Than Perfection
You don't have to know everything on day one.
But we do hope you're curious.
Curious about our products.
Curious about our customers.
Curious about design.
Curious about storytelling.
We can teach product knowledge.
We can't teach genuine enthusiasm.

We genuinely read every application.
Applications that appear incomplete, mass-submitted, or that don't include the requested information are unlikely to be considered.
We'd much rather read one thoughtful paragraph than a generic cover letter sent to dozens of employers.
We're not just looking for someone to fill a position—we're looking for someone who wants to help build something people remember.
