Full Job Description

Registered Nurse (RN)

Perioperative Care – Operating Room (OR) & PACU / Stage II Recovery

Location: McKinley Surgery Center – Fairbanks, Alaska
Position Type: Part-Time

Position Summary: McKinley Surgery Center is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and motivated Registered Nurse to join our perioperative team. This position provides comprehensive nursing care throughout the surgical experience, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative circulating responsibilities, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Stage II recovery. The ideal candidate is committed to patient safety, exceptional customer service, and delivering high-quality outpatient surgical care.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care throughout the perioperative process.
Perform preoperative patient assessments and prepare patients for surgery.
Function as the circulating nurse during surgical procedures while maintaining a sterile and safe environment.
Monitor patients during Phase I (PACU) and Stage II recovery, assessing recovery from anesthesia and readiness for discharge.
Administer medications and treatments as ordered.
Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
Educate patients and families regarding procedures, postoperative care, medications, and discharge instructions.
Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, sterile processing personnel, and other members of the healthcare team.
Accurately document patient care in the electronic medical record.
Maintain compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing staff education.

Duties:

Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process
Organizes time, equipment, supplies and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management
Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room
Organizes nursing activities efficiently and effectively
Delegates activities appropriate to the abilities of available staff members
Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective turnover time
Assists with supply, drug and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability
Addresses patients’ needs during admission to the operating room, with attention to requirements specific to the outpatient setting
Transports patients to the operating room observing policies/procedures, safety requirements and patient needs
Identifies the patient and correct surgical intervention according to policy/procedure and communicates suck information to all members of the surgical team
Reviews patients’ medical records/needs to plan care with other healthcare team members
Provides comfort and reassurance to patient
Maintains patient’s privacy and dignity
Explains intraoperative phase of routine procedures and care to the patient
Performs the PACU nurse’s role and functions following approved procedures to meet the requirements of scheduled procedures
Prepares PACU according to requirements of patient/procedure to be performed
Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies and instruments before start of procedure and positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure
Anticipates needs of surgical team and assists anesthesia personnel by supporting patient during administration of anesthesia
Assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient and prepares operative site as directed by established procedures
Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards
Assists with identification and confirmation of operative site
Provides for comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters
Provides continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel and documenting records accordingly
Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
Accurately comprehends and interprets verbal orders/directions
Documents patient care records and other forms accurately following policies and procedures
Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about patient’s status

Qualifications

Required

Current Alaska Registered Nurse (RN) license or ability to obtain prior to employment.
Current BLS certification.
Current ACLS certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.

Preferred

Previous experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Operating Room, PACU, or perioperative setting.
Moderate sedation recovery experience.
PALS certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong critical thinking and clinical assessment skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical procedures, and perioperative standards.
Commitment to patient-centered care, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and assist patients using appropriate body mechanics.
Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and moving equipment.
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
