Full Job Description

Summary of Position

The Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS)is responsible for measuring and monitoring Clinical Support Services, compliance data, and quality of care metrics as related to the following: Developmental Disabilities Individual Behavioral Support and Care Coordination Organization participation, and individuals’ and families’ satisfaction, and etc.

Work closely with the Clinical Director, Residential Director and Program Managers in their efforts to shift the service paradigm to achieve better clinical outcomes.
Primarily responsible for a caseload of individuals (approximately 25-35), some of whom present with intense behavioral crisis. Collaborate with the psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and NYCSIDD(NYSTART) to ensure that mental health wrap-around support services are being maximized to meet the individuals’ needs.
Review the behavioral plans of all individuals receiving services to (1) ensure that staff is effectively implementing the plans as designed through observation and documentation and (2) timeframes for follow-up assessments are met so that plan may be modified as required
Participate in the continuing interdisciplinary evaluation of individuals for the purpose of initiating, monitoring, and follow-up of individualized behavior plan and functional assessments.
Assist with matters related to regulatory behavioral supports mandates, and compliance from the OPWDD, MHLS (Mental Hygiene Legal Services, Justice Center and CMS (Center for Medicaid)

Characteristic Duties

Adheres to the performance expectations; ensures industry best practices and promotes an environment where integrity and self-advocacy are championed. Monitors staff/stakeholders relationships to ensure that rights of the individuals are observed. Participates in the following committees: Informed Consent Committee (ICC) and Human Rights Committee (HRC), and monitors program compliance regarding committee recommendations and action plan.

Conducts internal behavioral supports compliance audits regularly and prior to review/recertification visits by regulatory groups. Will monitor program compliance regarding IRC recommendations as they relate to individuals’ behavior supports and will work with Residential Director and Program Managers to avoid and correct all systemic concerns emanating from internal and external investigations.

Under the leadership of the Director of DD Services will collaborate with Behavior Intervention Specialists (BIS), Qualified Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Professionals (QIDPs), Residential Director, and Program Managers to devise department wide quality of care indicators (outcome) and will monitor department’s performance regarding these outcomes.

Will work collaboratively with Behavior Intervention Specialists, Qualified Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Professionals (QIDPs), Residential Director, and Program Managers to deploy agency resources to ensure the timely training in accordance to the industry's best practices and standards.

Essential Duties

Monitor performance targets Attend all medication review meetings with psychiatrist, interdisciplinary team meetings, and intake committee meetings as needed.
Present Behavioral support plans to the Human Rights Committee monthly and maintain up-to-date clinical support records
Provide direct in-service training of individual's behavior plan in the programs. Provide individual/group counseling as well as crisis interventions when needed.
Review monthly residential data collection and analysis. Write monthly notes summarizing findings.
Conduct evaluations, such as Functional Behavior Assessments, Functional Behavior Analyses, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Third Edition
Report to program location during emergencies and audits
Collaborate with residential staff and psychiatric providers regarding individuals’ mental health support needs.
Advocate for safety and protection needs of staff and individuals.
Utilizes his or her experience with electronic health records

Qualifications and Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Candidate should have (a) either a Master’s degree in Psychology or Health/Human Services or a related field, plus (4) years experience in developmental disabilities services or (b) a Bachelor’s degree in Health/Human Services or a related field with (8) years’ supervisory experience in developmental disabilities.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment Demands

The Behavior Intervention Specialist may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed. In addition, the Behavior Intervention Specialist must be willing and able to travel to such locations and with such frequency as Unique People Services deems necessary - using public transportation or the agency vehicle. Required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop or bend. Possess the ability to perceive the nature of objects by eye with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, up to 30 feet and to perceive information through speaking and listening. The Behavior Intervention Specialist must carry a cell phone 24/7; must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of self or others; and must be willing to comply with all safety laws, policies and rules.
