Medicaid Paralegal

McCarthy Law, LLC — East Greenwich, Rhode Island (in-person)

Full-time | Monday–Friday, approximately 8:30 AM–4:30 PM | Applications accepted on a rolling basis | All inquiries held in confidence

The opportunity

When a family calls McCarthy Law, a parent or spouse usually needs nursing home or long-term care right now — and the Medicaid process standing between them and that care is one of the most complicated things they will ever face. You already know this, because you have carried these applications before: the five-year lookback, the verifications, the agency follow-up, the deadline that cannot slip.

Medicaid is not a side practice here. It is a pillar of our elder law work, with dedicated systems, a senior Medicaid paralegal, and a caseload that grows every year. We are hiring an experienced Medicaid Paralegal to take ownership of applications from day one — and to build a career at a firm that treats this work as a craft.

McCarthy Law is a rapidly growing, female-founded elder law and estate planning firm in downtown East Greenwich, serving families across Rhode Island in estate planning, elder law, life care planning, probate, and guardianship. Our elder law practice runs deeper than most: it includes an in-house elder care coordination team — a capability few firms anywhere offer — and our paralegals have been recognized for excellence in their work. What you'll own

Rhode Island long-term-care Medicaid applications, end to end — from gathering five years of financial records through assembling, filing, and carrying the application to approval
Responses to DHS requests for additional documentation (ADRs) and information requests — accurate, complete, and on deadline
The firm's application pipeline: every pending application, renewal, and deadline tracked so nothing waits on us
Annual Medicaid renewals and recertifications for existing clients
Relationships that move cases: clients and their families, nursing facilities, banks, and DHS caseworkers
Hearing binders and attorney support in Medicaid appeals
Complete, audit-ready client files, maintained to the firm's checklists and templates

What success looks like

90 days: You are independently carrying a set of active application files — DHS follow-ups current, the tracker accurate, nothing in your caseload waiting on you.
Six months: You own your caseload end to end. Attorneys hand you a new matter knowing it will move; families know your name and trust your answers.
One year: Your approvals speak for themselves, and you are making the practice better — sharpening checklists, tightening the renewal calendar, and helping the Medicaid team scale.

What you bring

3+ years working with long-term-care Medicaid applications — at an elder law or estate planning firm, as a state eligibility specialist (DHS/EOHHS or another state's equivalent), or as a skilled-nursing-facility Medicaid coordinator
Personal, end-to-end application ownership: gathering and reviewing lookback records, assembling the filing, responding to verification and documentation requests, and following cases through to approval
Working knowledge of long-term-care Medicaid financial eligibility — lookback review, spend-down, penalty periods, income and asset rules (Rhode Island specifics are learnable if your experience is from another state)
Exceptional attention to detail and command of large volumes of financial and medical records
Clear, patient, compassionate communication — much of your day is spent with older adults and families under real stress
The ability to manage many concurrent deadlines independently

Preferred, but not required: direct Rhode Island DHS experience (applications, ADRs, renewals, or appeals); experience supporting Medicaid appeals and fair hearings; a paralegal certificate or degree.

If you have done this work under a different title — eligibility technician, benefits specialist, facility Medicaid coordinator — you are exactly who we want to hear from. The title matters less to us than the experience.
